I am not sure whether to take Monty to a local dressage comp next weekend. He has been out a few times before but usually my friend comes with her mare to hold Monty's hoof and give me a kick up the a*se but she is working on Saturday ( I know, how inconsiderate

) so it would mean going it alone

He is usually fine at competitions but has acquired the nickname 'Nappy Norman' and randomly heads off towards my friends mare and tries to stick to her like glue

My friends mare is so used to it though that she doesn't take any notice. I'm worried he'll do it to another horse

Also he is ok in the warm up and works nicely but once we get into the arena he turns into a lazy nappy donkey

Any tips greatfully recieved
Thanks

Have you been to the venue before? If you know it and are happy with it I would go!

Sounds like your horse is fine at comps, most people at small local comps are considerate if your horse latches on to their horse! You will might find that he is better without his friend distracting him...

As for changing when he gets in the arena... the mare i ride does that! Drives me crazy... i now go in and do lots of transitions trot to walk, walk to canter etc. mixed with a few strides of leg yielding before the bell rings. Helps her concentrate on the job and me!

If it was me i would go if i know the veune

Goodluck!

Just take him & see how things go, if you only go with your friends horse who he's attached to you are actually feeding the problem. You may find, as has been mentioned, that without the distraction of the other horse he may settle down & you have a good show. Just go for it.

my daughters slightly stressy pony is much calmer when she goes to shows alone. Whe we take her with a friend she just whinnies at him all the time.

My old girl is an absolute nutter if she goes to a show with a field mate. Its something we are going to try and work on this winter as my daughter has a new young horse and we both want to do our RCX winter dressage league.

So I would say go for it. The only thing I would suggest is that you might want to take a friend, even a non horsey person to assist with holding (if you need the loo), fetchinng, carrying etc. I allways need help with my lorry ramp!
