I posted a few months ago about haylage and if you thought I was feeding the correct amount. I've had to move yard and they sell good hay so I have no reason to buy in haylage. I'm not sure the correct weight I should be giving him though? I ve read somewhere you reduce the weight by 50%

So pony is 400kgs. He was getting 4/5kg of haylage a day. This was with daily turnout but there was hardly any grass so he would come in hungry and get 1 slice of hay.

Now he's in a field with a decent amount of grass for this time of year. I've been giving him 3 kg of hay which is roughly 3 sections. Do you think this is too much or not enough?

If thats is all the forage he is getting overnight (stabled?) I would say 3kgs is def not enough :( Not sure how big your slices are though, because my slices for 3 work out more like 6kgs. Have you weighed the net with 3 slices in?

When I asked before the % of his body weight worked out at 8kg per day. So he had 1 slice of hay in the morning then out to grass in for a slice of hay and then 4/5kg haylage overnight which worked out about 8kg.

I know you feed less hay so wondering how much less. The grass he has during the day is good as hes came in with a bulgy belly whereas at last yard his belly would be tight looking.

Sorry but I always thought you fed more hay and less haylege. Regardless the hay should last most of the night IMO. Id say a min of 6kgs, but would prob feed 8kgs myself x

I have no idea about weight but as long as pony isn't a fatty I'd just be aiming to have a small amount left in next in the morning.

well if he has plenty grass in the day 3 sections of good quality hay at night should be enough. is he being fed any bucket food? (got to add that into the equation) does he appear to be hungry? does he clear all his hay up? does he eat his bed? how is his weight? fat/thin/just right? is he greedy? how long does his night net last him?

Thanks.

I think I will just keep an eye on him.

He Doesn't eat his bed. He gets a dinner and breakfast which consists of 500gm chaff and 1 small scoop speedbeet andthen half of that for bfast

iPhone posted before I asked it to!

He's just the right weight just now. Has problems in the summer with fatness but it's manageable on a restricted paddock.

If he's on good grass & is a good weight that sounds about right to me.

As a comparison my lot are on really good grass between 7am-4pm & get a net to come into of 1kg & then another at 9pm of 3kg. The horses consisit of a 500kg tbx, & three 2yo who are around the 450kg mark.
