as above. this evening. going with mum and daughter to see a horse for daughter. based at a riding school, apparently the horse is too sharp and forward to be used in the riding school.

its a friesian x warmblood, 8 years old, very sharp, sensitive mouth, loves to jump and goes nicely on the flat (apparently, this is what they have been told so far) problem is its not good in traffic when hacking alone (this is something they can work on but she has a private yard so nobody to hack out with)

daughter wants it to get out competing on, as apparently its bold and loves to jump. its up for 1800. i'm experienced with buying horses in general but i tend to buy from auctions or get given horses to play around with - so can anyone give me some advice to help me help them?? if that makes any sense! they have asked me to take riding gear as they want me to ride after the owner, but before daughter gets on

This, but I would be very concerned about taking on a sharp horse that is not good in traffic if there is nothing to take out with it to help with getting it through the problem, its confidence could get even worse as time goes on.
 
this is what i'm thinking, she bought a youngster last year to bring on, and it apparently turned really nasty so it went - but knocked her confidence a bit. personally i think they should be looking for a been-there-done-it type...

i'm good friends especially with the mum of this girl, and the daughter - but i've not seen them for a good while as we live in different areas, but since the horse is only about an hour from me they asked me to go.

guess i'll just give my judgement and then they can make their choice :)
 
How will they get over the hacking issue without an equine companion? Will any new horse be kept on its own?
 
no, they've got 2 other horses so it won't be living on its own, its just that mum is horsey but doesn't ride so there's nobody for her to hack with.

personally to me the horse doesn't sound suitable for what they want, and i've not even seen it yet. but all i can do is give my opinion...

I don't think this is suitable for any one with any confidence issues, and if they need two people to ride it before she gets on, this is a major confidence issue, if I were you I would find them something more suitable, stick with your gut feeling.
 
To be blunt, if there is nobody for the daughter to hack out with, they must be idiots even thinking about it! I wouldn't buy it for my son to hack out on. How old is the daughter?

The ad is being totally honest, they're just focusing on the fact that it can jump and glossing over the negatives - that alone says they're not up to it. I've seen this so much lately, where children rule the roost and parents don't stand up to them, so children choose unsuitable equines.. It does look a nice type and that it has a good jump though. Do you personally think they're up to doing the schooling on hacking out? For them to need someone else to ride the horse after they've seen the owner ride also says "too novice" to cope to me..


I would ask to see it hack out alone in traffic, so that the mother can see what kind of danger she would be putting her daughter in..
 
miss l toe - i agree with u, im currently trawling trying to find something else - their budget is 3k and she wants to do RC stuff. shes a good rider but lacks confidence so i think she needs something to take care of her. trouble is, can you get something like that for 3k? :confused:
 
The ad says it is not good in traffic but better in company so not even good in company. They have owned it for 3 years and seem fairly experienced, I would not buy this for a slightly nervous person it could be a disaster unless they either have off road hacking or dont hack.
I would actually not even go and try it in case it was super in other ways, the hacking issue would be enough to put me off, there are others around wait and see what else there is.

thanks honey, this just backs up exactly what i think. daughter is 16. thats a good point about the traffic, i'll definitely make sure they see it on the road. personally, no i dont think she'd be able to get it hacking out in traffic, BUT they are in a very countrified, low traffic area, hacking straight onto the downs, so i guess it depends whether its JUST traffic it hates, or whether it just doesn't like going alone...
 
oh boy - she shouldnt even be considering it. Like every one else says it sounds like she`s got confidence issues and the horse will pick up on this out hacking = an accident waiting to happen with traffic.
 
Horse does not sound suitable at all - especially a big boy like him!

IMO 3 grand is MORE than enough to find a sensible PC/RC pony. My first pony was free and was honestly the best little PC pony i've ever come across - as well and being as safe as houses.
 
If you/they look on Horsequest in the Allrounder Section there is an under £3,000 sub-catergory and there are loads to choose from.
 
He looks fab... what a bargain! A million times nicer than the 'non hacking' mare - do make them go and look at him and let us know what happens!

While it does seem to be the case that everyone and their mother rides in a martingale, I would still want to know why he is being ridden in a martingale. It doesn't inspire me with confidence, especially with the line about him being forward going. Does that mean he throws his head into the air and takes off?

It is in a riding school, so it is fairly likely that the martingale is for the protection of the horse's mouth or just part of the standard kit.

I'd be more concerned that it has been in the same home 3 years and yet they say it is too sharp.... have they not been able to deal with it in 3 years? Why haven't they sold it sooner if it is unsuitable? Or is this not the true reason? If they are a riding school presumably they have experienced people to ride it and are able to give it lots of work and experienced handling. What will it be like in infrequent work with less experienced people?
 
Just a humble opinion but having had a horse that was nervous in traffic and having done everything to no avail, there is no way I would touch a traffic shy horse again! For some it is just something that will never change and it is Dangerous for everyone. If the daughter has already had her confidence knocked it's the last thing she needs. Anyone else got the t shirt??
