So...my parents have just jetted off on holiday for a week and I'm dog sitting...the thing is for the past 3 days, my Goldie has been licking at her "lady parts" and bum constantly for a good 15 - 20 minutes or until we physically pull her away - she'll then chew her paws.
I must admit she's not done herself any harm and we're keeping our eyes out for any rashes or irritation and can't see anything..her anal glands aren't full and she isn't rubbing along the floor or anything like that. My mum said she didn't want to take her to the vets but I'm worried about her transferring infection etc - we can't see any fleas or anything like that BUT we can't risk one flea with our GSD's allergies in the house!!
When is it vet visit time and has anybody any idea why she's doing this???

Thanks in advance!!

Anything changed at all? New carpet/air freshener/bunch of flowers in the house?

Has she been anywhere where she might have picked up an irritant, long grass, sprayed crops, flowers, chemicals in water etc?

Give her a Malaseb bath (I KNOW you must have some :p) to be on the safe side and if it continues then the vet...is she spayed?

Did she start this before or after your parents left? If the latter, might be anxious/self-comforting behaviour.

Every time you catch her give her a vocal reprimand and try and exhaust her through play, brain training, a toy, hide and seek, whatever!

My parents left like 10 minutes ago and its been 3 days now...and she's just been groomed a week ago so I know its not a case of hairy toes!! - we've mainly road walked because of the rain so not that I can think of, and nothings changed.
She is spayed and we have an abundance of Malaseb!!! :p I'll try that and then attempt the distraction thing...she is a Goldie after all their attention span lasts all of 10 seconds! (brain training?? Misty? haha...!!)
She doesn't tend to do nervousness or stress, but she could have seen the cases and picked up the scary vibes off our GSD? (but even the GSD hasn't been too bad this year)

Nothing else to add really just wanted to say hope she's ok! :)

Only thing I can think is if she's got a bit of a 'lady infection'? If you're stopping her licking her 'bits' then the paw chewing could just be anxiety because of not being able to lick where she really wants to?

My old Ridgeback did this, she started out just licking at her bum and lady bits then she started knawing at her bum untill she was bleeding!

The vet had no clue as to why she was doing it, her anal glands were fine ans there had been no changed in her immediate surroundings.

We think it was just an obsessive / anxious thing as she was a nervy old thing!

The vet got me to examine her while she just looked over my shoulder (Big scary, unsocialised, fear aggressive ridgey + very sore bottom + strange vet = ALOT of quite scary grumbles from the old girl!)

Yeah that's what I'm worried about :( I think I'll give her a bath, and use some distraction and then if she's no better by Weds its vet time!!
I know the feeling, they like us to hold our GSD's head if they're injecting her, purely because our dog (isn't people aggressive) is a little nervous!

my spangle does this - again vets can find no obvious reason - when he's bad he has a dose of steroids just to calm it down and stop the itching and antibiotics to stop infection (its a vicious circle - he starts licking then it gets tichy and he licks more and get infected) - then its fine for a bit - until the next time

hibiscrub seems to help - as does some antibacterial cream :) usally we manage to stop it with that - its only if it gets worse do we go to vets and they know him so just sign off for steroids and antibiotics as usual

I've put some Malaseb spray on her paws..I'll try Hibiscrub, posie_honey (when I have time to find it!!! :P)
she's just started chewing so I was waving my arms round like a nut going "MISTTTYYY LOOK OVER HERE!!!" and she stopped and came running over, then sat down and started to chew again :(
she's stopped now, but I have to go to work for a 6hr shift!! :(
