So whilst schooling (Roo was going really well as well) my mare all of a sudden lost her back end - my friend watching said it looked like one leg just slid out from under her and she went down with all her weight through the front of her fetlock joint
Jumped off, she stood with squished leg held up but did walk away ok, just a bit short.
Left her to rest for a bit and then we had Bailey's on the yard with weigh bridge - when it was her turn she went up no problems then as she stepped off the weigh bridge (a whole 1 inch heigt) it happened again! She had a slight slip on the concrete and went down hard. Que a very lame horse!!
Vet was immediately called (previous plan had been to watch and see how she did overnight but now was far too lame to allow that!) When vet came she was better but still quite lame in trot. Luckily the vet is happy she's just wrenched everything and is stiff and sore.
The route cause of all this - a golf ball!!!!!! Went and hunted in the school as couldn't work out what had happened and we found a golf ball about 1 ft away from where she went down, in the direction she'd have shoved it. (we think the 2nd time was a small slip on concrete that normally wouldn't cause her to go down but as she was sore she just couldn't recover)
Time for 2 weeks rest followed by back lady visit before she can work again as there's no way she hasn't totally wrenched her lower back :-( We literally had her back done 10 days ago!!
On a plus note she's not damaged herself long term
She had managed to go a whole year without an emergency vet visit - she obviously thought it was about time for her to see them again
Learning point - golf balls and horses do not mix (we have no idea where the golf ball came from)
