I had to retire my 16.2 TB gelding a few months ago due to a hock spavin which couldn't be sorted.

He has lost top line and muscle which I expected but has dropped off a lot of weight recently . He is still being fed and stabled when required.

Is this normal ?

The horses I kept retired, did change shape a bit as they lost muscle, but they still retained their good condition.

Sounds like a check by the vet would be a good idea, best to check it out rather than leave to get worse.

Many horses struggle to keep weight on when in pain, does he currently need anything to ease the discomfort from his hocks? If not it might be worth a try. I have one with dodgy hocks and back and he gets boswelia at the advice of my vet, it's definitely made a difference. He drops weight to when sore, it was the first sign we got when he needed his hsocks injected again.

Yes, especially if they have been kept 'up' and fit for many years, and of course, if they are older animals.

You don't mention how old your lad is. My lad had re-occurring septic feet, so he was tested for cushings. Came back a low positive and is being treated. He got worse before he got better but is looking ok now.

My lad went from this ....
