Till's is now 3 1/2 and with evenings drawing in and a schooling 50m down the road (next door!) I wondered whether it would be worthwhile investing 20mins once a week on some very, very light schooling rather than the odd bit we do here and there in the field.

BUT getting an instructor out for just 20 mins seems a bit silly atm when there are things I can be doing myself with her alongside having lessons on instructors horse so I wondered whether there was a good book with some nice exercises in that we can start working towards?? (So I can do just one or 2 short exercises once a week rather than a whole session as IMO she physically should be asked for anymore yet!). My hope is to take her to do some dressage come June (seems an awfully long way away

) so we'd be looking to do things that build up very slowly but correctly - perhaps getting my instructor up once a month as a "review" session as I know the girl that rides Tilly's companion is looking to have a monthly lesson so could tag Tilly on at the start/end.

Ideas....

I dont know any books, but things like large serpentines, loops in from the track, lots and lots of changes of rein. The rein changes will help her to learn to balance more too

Ohh, I may be in Edinburgh that weekend but if not I'll try and pop down!

I've never really "schooled" before, atleast not outside a lesson situation, so really have no idea what I should and shouldn't be doing

Change the rein like at least once every four laps. Dont stay on the track for more than one lap.

Circles and circles and circles and circles of ALL sizes EVERYWHERE in the arena you can think of. Just whatever - if you cant think of anything make it up.

Books are good, but all horses are different - and it depends on what muscles need building etc.

There is a book called 100 schooling excercises or something?
