Did our second novice today.
Was late as a metal part fell off the lorry anda was dragging so had to return home and tie it up.
Anyway, ended up ok for time, rushed coursewalk but otherwise not too bad.
Dressage, he came out feeling relaxed, so went in near enough immediately and he did what to me felt like a nice test. Shame I couldn't ride it! Actually got a comment remarking on how I needed to learn how to ride 15m half circles! (first time doing it, and I rode it wrong!) So that reduced our marks plus a little tense, so a 44 which was bottom half of a small class.
Sj, he was amazing. It was a 1.10 (Dad said 1.15, I'm not sure) course and he went CLEAR! I was delighted as only our 2nd/3rd double clear and first clear at novice level. Really listening.
So that was our firt mistake, assuming he would to that xc! Second was not tiring him out enough!
He was fabulous jumping wise xc, jumping big wide ditches with a tiny pole on top, corners, skinnies etc. But I could not control him! Ended up with 18 time pens as had to go slowly to avoid being tanked over every fence.
In retrospect, I think a:I need to get him back faster, shorten my reins and think ahead and b:I need to be fitter.
Decent course, not full up to height I'd say but a few questions.
So he went clear and ended up 5th, ok but without the time would have been 2nd so need to sort out our brakes.
He has a sensitive mouth so thinking about trying a grackle and and maybe our myler? Any suggestions welcome.
And the event was beautifully run, on time if not early, decent ground, scores up v. quickly and sensibly gave out dressage sheets etc. to let people get home.
V. Wet and muddy though!
