So new horse arrived yesterday with nothing so need new tack. Not in much of a rush as atm YO has a racing saddle for him etc!
But want to buy him a nice saddle to do everything in.
Can anyone recomend a good cheapish saddle that is comfy and fits well?
Is ebay worth a look?

Could you get an unbranded one? As in made by a small business but not made to measure? Sky's tack is 7yo and still does the job fine, but only cost the parentals £250 (it is only a pony saddle but still.)

Did I read in another post that new horsie is an ex-racer? If so, mine has a high wither GP thorowgood synthetic. Under £300 new, and despite being tempted to buy a leather one as I am now able to, I am loath to change it as it is so comfortable & lightweight, fits him beatifully, and helps my stickability when he is in one of "those" moods!

A meadow creek saddlery company saddle is quite cheap(about 600 I think) but good quality, comfortable and fits well. Maybe you could get a saddler to visit who stocks a wide variety for you to try to see what you prefer.....gd luck!

I have bought a number of saddles from e bay and have never had a bad one - get all the measurements before you bid - if it is a bad fit you can always sell it again for around the same money

I was very anti synthetic so got a nice 2nd hand leahter for my girl, however 18 months later the tree cracked. Thats the only downside to 2nd hand, you dont know what the history is.

I had to buy a cheap saddle next as we had just spent an outragous amount on a new saddle for my daughters new horse. I didnt want anothr 2nd hand so I tried a Wintec VSD. I had to eat my word, it is a very good saddle, fits my TBx a dream and just under £300.

The other thing to consider is that you can change the gullet if the horse changes shape. Also they are on the same tree as the Bates saddles. So if you had one that fits well and come into some money later on, you know that a bates of the same type and gullet will be ok.

with him being exracer and bound to put weight and muscle on you would prob be better with a Wintec or Thorowgood to start with so it can grow with him. My lad has had 6 saddles in the last year due to shape change - i finally got a Wintec 2000 which fitted beautifully and could be widened with him, it was also incredibly comfortable! Only getting rid of it as I got a Saddle Co one second hand...

My exracer mare is also in an adjustable, although it is the Colligate GP in leather with the adjustable gullet system, they are fab, light, comfy and really good value. Mine was £300 second hand from ebay...

And as it happens there is a collegiate 17.5 saddle on ebay now - ending in an hour and a half currently with no bids at £295 - if you're interested.

(no, it's not mine!)
