You can pick up a mini shetland for about £250 but they still cost a fair bit, and are jsu as hard to care for..u av to watch out for things like laminitis and jus cos they small dnt mean they aren't costly things like livery, and vet and farrier bills all cost the same!! wot does ur mum n dad say?

depend what area you live for cost between £400 to £600 and if you want a registered or unregistered pony? also shetlands are not the easiest. i' ve had horse for nearly 20 years and just brought a shetland as a companion pony and she is the hardest pony i've eva had. very strong to handle has a real mind of it own. i would say you are best the have something else as a first pony

I wouldn't get a shetland, they can be little b*ggers. Why not consider visiting a rescue centre and see if they have anything suitable? They will also be able to assess your experience and you will be able to know you are ready to own a pony.
where would you keep it? Who will pay for it? How much experience with horses have you?

i want to show inhand or just simply have a pet. I think they are great and i love the thickness of there manes and i have considered all the down sides and they can be evil. But i just am ready now to take on a pony.

But how much experience have you? And where will you keep it? Shetlands can be hard first ponies. Not trying to be harsh, just aware of how much work is involved. Will you keep it DIY or full livery or at home?

still haven't answered the actualy question....
connemaras are nice, a bit bigger though and very expensive( at least in my area..) Welsh are nice, got personality but all the ones I've met have been lovely.

just where your going to keep it? Who will finance it (I know you said your going to save but savings run out fast w/ livery etc.) I got my first pony ( a connemara) when I was a little younger than you but stabled in full livery and had plenty of experienced people to help as no way was I experienced enough to take on horse ownership.
Also, a youngster might be quite a challenge?
Good luck whatever you decide

No NO do not get a shetland they are evil my first pony was a sh!tland and never ever again!

You would be better off getting a welsh section A or something as shetlands are very stroppy and can be a real little handfull to do anything with,i think ive only ever met 5 that dont bite or kick.

Can I also just say, don't brand all shetlands as evil! I have one and there are 2 minatures on our yard and they are nicer natured than both the welshie's we have so it's like me saying that welshies are evil just because the two we have are.

I think shetlands are like terriers you either love them or loathe them. I personally have had to deal with several v. naughty shetlands as people tend to spoil them like they do small dogs. As for the question in hand, you can get a reasonable first pony for anything from around £700 up, and if I was 13 again I would rather have something I can ride afterall it is not the buying of the horses that is expensive at this sort of level but the keeping. A shetland costs as much to keep as a horse.
