Just a thought at the moment but I was wondering;
Would free grazing/ field shelter ( stable types) for one retired mare or happy hacker in return for share of jobs get any interest........

I would have thought it would be of interest, depends on location and hacking safety.

I would be wary of a retired horse because you might just find yourself looking after it as well as your own. A hacking horse would have more chance of the owner seeing it twice a day. I know of plenty of retired horses whose owners appear once a week.

Thank you. I'm in warwickshire, near atherstone.
Currently just at the idea stage, but trying to work out feasibility at the mo.
My horse is currently on part livery and I think she is pretty much ready to retire, so would like to move her home - so just getting info together first.

That was also my worry about a retired horse - in that it would just be dumped!

I would do this. At the moment I have free use of a scrubby 1 acre paddock and tiny field shelter as long as I stay on top of the maintenance. There's only me and it's tough but I had no option. I can afford to buy decent feed, supplements, and hay but I cannot afford livery/rent. I put notes up on gates and through letterboxes saying this and offering work in return for somewhere to keep her. My girl is 28 and the other option was PTS. It worries me that she's roughing it at her age but we've managed to do 12 months here. I won't be putting us through another winter up there though so I would love to find someone local offering what you are.

Please move near me. You can have free grazing, stable, field shelter and hay if you are happy to look after my horses when I go away!!! Would suit me down to the ground!

Good point about the horse being dumped. Could you put on the notice 'references available' and get the most reputable person you know to vouch for you?

This can be true, and the possibility worried the lady that let me use her field and I have laid those to rest. There are people like me out there struggling to keep precious oldies, and even young retirees, that aren't ready for their final journey yet and this offer could be a lifeline for the right person.

If I do it - I'll do it properly. Post and rail, water trough connected to mains, field shelter that looks like two stables -my horse used to being in every night so want to continue this, she is a bit of a diva so won't rough it.
My problem is long work hours. I would be able to muck out each morning - mon to fri ( obvs would do both horses) but would not be able to bring in at a decent time and also would like a lie in on a Sunday!
So looking to share jobs - pooh picking etc.
would appreciate someone who could be there for farrier/ vet during week day, day times.
Strawbz - you sounds perfect! Shame no where near and I've not even started sorting out yet!

Also plenty of bridle ways around here- the only problem - two mins of road work to get to nearest and road also used by quarry lorries so horse would need to be traffic proof!

Someone on. Horse FB group has been offering similar for weeks, no takers. She wants a retired horse to keep hers company and for chores share. Trouble is, she wants strictly retired as the horses will bond and she doesn't want the companion removed for riding thereby freaking out her horse. Tricky.
