All the leadropes I have are falling apart - horse isn't even a pulling lunatic (much :D ) - so I'm looking for hints on what brands have lived up without fraying/untwisting.

I usually just buy from my local saddlery, but I'm not going to support them if the stuff they sell doesn't last :o

On that note, is braided better than twisted rope or is it more likely to cause burns?

Galaxy counters for all! :)

Galaxy counters are my fav!!!!!

This is a link to my current lead rope. I was looking for something longer than - standard for a youngster. I think these are 10 foot long which is plenty long enough but they are much cheaper than a lot of the 12 foot natural horsemanship lead ropes.

They area also supposed to be stretchy so if horse pulls back there is a bit of give.

Much more expensive than a standard rope but I wanted a long one and this was the cheapest I could find which was still a comfortable cotton rope style.

I like the aerborn(?) ones, bit more like dog leads but super sort and easy to tie, as fairly thin but still seem strong, have got one with a chain on the end, normally chain just doubled over but if the madam is bein strong it's there!

What i want to know is where all the good ropes have gone. I like the the thicker sturdier ropes that did not blow around in the slightest breeze and you could actually hold onto without your hand getting ripped to shreds if the horse pulled back, i HATE HATE HATE these flimsy ones!!!!

Rant over :mad::D

I prefer the ones that have a shiny appearances, not sure whetehr they are coated with something or if the actually nylon gives it that appearance.....wear much better than the cotton types and the ones that aren't twisted tend to be better.

cant remember which makes i used to get and have had the odd few expensive ones but these look similar and not too bad price:

also they dont hold water if they get wet which is a bonus!

At the threat of buying a chained leadrope pigboy has suddenly been a lot less tuggy, maybe I should use telekinesis more often!?

Thankyou all very much, your tips are just what I was looking for!

Now I just need to pick one (one, one only, come on, you need to eat...) :D

All cotton leadropes in the shops are now much thinner and deff more flimsy, this is because the price of cotton has sky rocketed!!
I cant find any of the old thick lead ropes in stores any more :(

I hate to say it (more money than sense, etc. etc. etc., and no, I'm no a Parellite), but the Parelli 12' rope is great. I don't like using others now. Had this one for something like five years and it's still going strong. Part of the reason I like it is the feeling that one gets of the horse down it.

*ducks under parapet and awaits the missiles*

The reason I like the aerborn ones, is beacuse I find them very strong but not too thick, I don't like them to thick beacuse a) I have smallish hands and b) I never seem able to tie them up properly with the thick leadrope, so always have to have a tie to attach them to.

Weaver are the best - about 10ft long, nice and thick and with a really solid brass clip. Also quite resistant to chewing despite my 3yo's best efforts. Also really like Weaver headcollars, bit more expensive than average but really soft with very strong buckles. I've even had them shipped from the USA, but KM elite and Kickin Western do sell selected colours and sizes.
The KM Elite ropes are nice too and come in some great colours for 'best' - not sure if they still do longer than 6ft tho.

Thank you for all the new tips!

I don't mind spending extra for something that will last - the horsey I have hasn't broken one himself yet and I've got through 3 in 6 months because they just fray almost instantly.

I think I may join Kirstyhen in getting a smart & yard rope too - current headcollar is leather so I don't have to worry about matchy-matchy and can just go crazy with colour combos :D Unless I see an adorable set and buy a new headcollar too... :o

Thanks all!
