Last July our wonderful border collie (called Sharon) was very unwell with an enlarged liver. This was thankfully controlled by drugs which she was weaned off. At the time we were not keen to operate, so a tumour could not be ruled out.

Well.......over the weekend she took a turn for the worst again......

Took her to the vet today and she not only has an enlarged liver but they are not sure if the spleen is also enlarged and she was very anemic. Her stomach is very swollen and when the vet applied the slightest bit of pressure round the area you could tell Sharon was not happy..

The vet took bloods and her liver count is up, but not as high as last year, but the worrying factor is that the red and white blood count is really high..

So the vets are not sure whether she is anemic due to an infection in the womb, or down to the spleen, or the liver...

So they have given her a mixture of drugs to see what makes a difference. What they are worried about is whether there is blood coming from the spleen, but they dont know this without opening her up, and I have said under no circumstances will that happen, as she is 12 years old. I dont want her to lose any quality of life at her age.

I am really worried about the whole thing. Sharon was born on our farm the year I was married and has the biggest part of my heart possible. Its just heartbreaking seeing her under the weather.

She still has interest in her food and water etc, and still wants to come out with me to go round the horses, so I am clinging to the positives in the hope that she does not deteriorate.

So please........needing as much goodluck and healing vibes that anyone has going spare.

Here is a picture of my most favourite girl in the whole world....

You know, I was about to PM you yesterday to ask how Sharon was doing, but I became side-tracked and didn't do it

.

She's such a lovely girl and I hope, for both your sakes, that she can recover again, like she has before. Bless her, she is so sweet.

hugs and the best hugest vibes from me!!! i hope you get some good news in the morning. Having her happy and still up to old tricks is such a good thing xx

Thanks everyone. Not much change this morning. She is lying on the sofa sound asleep just now. Did not eat her food last night that had the medication in it, so now going to have to put thinking cap on to try and get her to eat something..

The medication is granules so not as easy as a pill to slip into a piece of beef or chicken...

On a positive note she did come out to help me with the horses this morning and is drinking as normal. She also had a good peaceful nights sleep...

So very sorry to read your post Cx.. xxooxx

We are having an awful time ourselves at the moment with having to face putting our Great Dane to sleep . She would have been 15 years young at the end of this year, but she has suddenly gone down hill - so it is time to say our good byes ....

Thinking of you xox (((hugs)))

You know your dog best, but I've had an 14 year old with bad liver count that went through an operation without any problems, when the sedation left her system she was more vital than she'd been for weeks. And my Smooth Collie was operated for mammarygland-cancer twice when she was 11, 12 years old, though due to her being a Collie they made sure they used as mild anaesthetic as possible. I presume you have your reasons, I mainly wanted other people reading this thread to know that operating old dogs, could be "doable".

Many good luck vibes from Sweden.

Thank you everyone for your lovely best wishes, really does mean a lot. I told Sharon today that everyone on HHO was routing for her......she gave me a worried doggy look, which brought tears...

I have bought mince today and am going to try and give it a shot with her medicine. Had the vets out today with her next lot of injections (all three...

), and have to get the same done next Monday evening.

She did eat some pedigree chum meat tonight, but I did not put her medicine in it, as I want her to eat something.

Re the operation...the trouble is because they think there could be a possible tumour in the liver, the removing of the spleen wont help her in the long run unfortunately..
frown.gif
If it had not been for the liver problem as well then I would have got the spleen removed (no questions)....but unfortunately the vets think we have been dealt a double blow...

The vet checked her stomach again this afternoon when when was out and its still large, but we just have to make sure that there is no adverse pressure to the stomach area.

She has been out with me all day, and is snuggly sleeping on the sofa again in front of me.......I am just praying that we get some more quality time with her as long as we can.

But thank you all so much for your suggestions to get her to eat and your kind support etc, and I will keep you all posted on any developments with her.

Cxx

Sorry, it feels so unfair doesn't it, when they have something treatable and something else turns up and more or less ties your hands behind your back.

As I thought, you had reasons for saying surgery wasn't an option, it was only the part where you wrote : without opening her up, and I have said under no circumstances will that happen, as she is 12 years old. And I worried there might be someone reading that and thinking : so you can't put old dogs under the knife because they will never regain their strenght.

Wonderful to hear that she still want to do her "chores". That also makes it harder, at least for me, to make that final decision, but I also feel better afterwards, knowing that they enjoyed their life to the end.

Hugs from Sweden.
