Any mare hormonal supplements that actually work? Mare is nappy and grumpy and on edge when in season to be ridden and very shouty when bringing in and out of field . I’ve tried Oestress which she just wouldn’t eat and also premier performance sassy mare which she just about tolerates but I can’t see its helping at all. Any recommendations?

I am pleased with Oestress for my current mare but used Hormonease for my previous mare. My previous mare though got worse as she got older so ended up on regumate which was excellent but only available through the vet.

Have you had her scanned at all she could have problems with her ovaries?

There is an injection from the vet called improvac which has very good results 2 injections give 2-4 weeks apart and works for around 6 months most have it Feb/March time as seasons start others I know had the initial 2 injections and now have a 6 monthly top up. It's fairly inexpensive

Yes had ovaries scanned and no concerns.
I will speak to the vets re the injection. Thanks

Every mare is different. My current mare can be a bit tarty and distracted, but Oestress works like a dream for her.

My old mare would completely lose the plot for a couple days during her cycle during the strongest heat cycles of the year, early summer and autumn. I never found anything that helped. Vets were unwilling to prescribe Regumate so I just lived with not being able to do much with her for a few days per month between March and May.

Oestress liquid works well for mine, have you tried the powder version too? Some find it easier to eat.

Are you sure it’s hormone related? I assume the vet has ruled out other causes such as pain, ulcers etc? We had our very moody mare scanned too, she had a regumate trial too to see if that did anything. Stopped her seasons but the behaviour persisted…after investigations she has hock OA. Now medicated she is better.

Regumate trial might be a better idea to see if it helps before having something more long term such as the injection/implant.
