Can you buy it anywhere?

I just want a plain hay chaff. No additives and no extras.

Does anywhere do such a things anymore? I've only got one horse so no point in suggesting I buy a machine and make my own (before anyone suggests it! )

Simple systems do it (ruff stuff). But its expensive for what it is. I am scouring the free adds for a chaff cutter so I can do hay chaff and straw chaff for the fatties too.

It is still possible to get it!! I buy it for my mare. Comes in plain, white hessian sacks and it is literally finely chopped hay!!

It is unbranded though and I buy it from my local feed supplier - you could try ringing them to see who their supplier is? Their website is http://www.whalleycornmills.co.uk/

I read somewhere the other day that if you run your hay/straw whatever you want, through a garden shredder a couple of times it makes excellent chaff

Not tried it but been told a simple electric garden shredder will work - may be worth a try.

Yeah this is EXACTLY what I mean - WHY is it expensive??? In the olden days (70's, 80's and early 90's) our local farmer come feed merchant used to sell big hessian sacks of hay chaff he'd cut himself. Was cheap as chips, he made a profit but didn't sting people.

Makes me so cross. WHY are we expect to buy cheap to produce hay chaff for some extortionate cost?

If you phone around you will usually find a vendor that can source some for you.

It comes in a white, hessian sack for £6.

We had one vendor in the area that could stock it if you asked....now (a year later) we have a few who stock it full time.

It fell out of favour against the tide of alfalfa based and molassed stuff, but people are going back to it now.

I've heard the stuff I get comes from the Mollichop factory before they put all the crap on it, but I don't know if that's true or not .

I use a garden shredder if you put it through twice it is finer. My local feed store sell the stuff in white hessian sacks about £7 i think.

there is a very old fashioned chaff cutter on ebay... supposedly in working order
