Hi all,

Currently looking to relocate and the first thing on my mind is of course the horses!

Just wondering if anyone could recommend good horsey areas within easy commuting distance of south Manchester..? I've looked at some old threads recommending nice-sounding livery yards but we really want our own place so I'm guessing that's a bit of a taller order as you move closer to the city..? We currently live in the Peak District so have been completely spoilt with facilities & hacking but we're trying to reduce our commuting time so all ideas welcome!

We're looking for about 3-5 acres ideally with some kind of yard/shelter etc. but not a deal breaker as we can always get a mobile shelter & buy ourselves a nice shed from ebay :)

Thanks for your help!!

What parts have you looked at, lots of areas in good commuting distance are quite expensive.
I have noticed that there a an increased number of properties on market this year with land and they do not seem to be moving

Hi Adopter,

Thanks for your reply. Therein lies the problem :) We're thinking maybe the A6 corridor if thats what you can call it i.e. Hazel Grove, High Lane, New Mills type area. It's not that much closer than where we are but a little bit to keep OH happy!

The other area that looks promising is around Marple/Hayfield but again not sure if traffic-wise it's much of an improvement for us. But hopefully we could get a nice house & horses pretty nearby.

I saw some old threads talking about yards in Sale and round that sort of area, which would be more commutable but not sure if there's much land to rent.

So we're really just trying to get inspiration as I don't really know these areas at all. Tbh as long as we can keep neds very close to home, I'm happy to compromise & move somewhere less rural than I'd like :)

The hacking round Sale and Urmston is lovely - tonnes of off road hacking which I miss now I live in the country (how ironic!)

However, when I stabled down there, we struggled to find livery with decent grazing. I used to keep my horses off Fairy Lane and had access to the beautiful Chorlton and Sale Water Parks, plus the mersey valley woods and meadows. It was fab and I sometiems do box my Welshie up to meet a friend who still has stables there. You might be lucky though and it's certainly worth asking around. Maybe towards Urmston or Carrington you might find something, but I would guess whatever there is would come at a premium.

Probably best way is to drive round the area and stop at a few yards/farms to put in enquiries, you might just get lucky and find a farmer who has something spare to rent

Not sure if it helps, my neice lives in Glossop and her son is at 6th form college in Manchester. She tells m e how easy Manchester is on the train.
Manchester is 20mins by train from Macclesfield, but have to factor in drive to station.
