Good to see Battersea putting this out there

Those breeds should not exist and should not be supported by the Kennel Club. I suspect that prospective owners will not be put off continuing to buy as the deformed dogs are “so cute” so who cares about welfare? Oh yes, until the bills come in, and then the dogs can be dumped on the rescue societies. I also question the ethics of spending so much to try and fix the dumped dogs rather than just PTS, but acknowledge that it is a difficult area.

Very interesting but how that vet can say that bitch was ok to breed seems odd seeing how bad her breathing was.. what hope does the breed have?

The Australian vet in Richmond (vet on the hill or something?) was very brutal about a surgery he was doing, saying almost inevitably, brachycephalic dogs will require multiple surgeries and shouldn’t be bred. I was cheering!

I thought the same. Shows how low the bar is I guess that a dog considered acceptable to breed from is wheezing and rattling after a 3 minute walk along some flat tarmac.

Its such a shame a generally these dogs have amazing temperaments and we should be breeding them away from the physical deformities and keeping that nice nature.

It makes me really cross that the KC could ensure change happens but are just paralysed by their own uselessness. A simple outcross would massively support a healthy change.

The kennel club have a lot to answer for in my opinion.
As an aside yrs ago I had a lady come dog training with 2 British Buldogs, she turned out to be a vet nurse who bred them but didn't take them into her work for any treatment connected to breeding (she came to my daytime place of work) as she knew they would not approve! She knew how wrong it was, saw the results at work but still continued purely for the money.
