Hi there

Can anyone recommend a good trainer who could come to Plymouth and help me with my rising two year old? I don't think we have a serious problem, but I do need some help with her and I am not experienced with youngsters so am very much aware that I need educating myself. I would like someone who has lots of experience with youngsters, not someone who has just had one youngster and is an instructor. I know of people who are instructors who, in my opinion, have done too much with theirs. That's only my opinion, of course. I do have one lovely lady but she is away for three weeks and is so busy and I would prefer to pay someone to help on a regular basis.

I have tried the EBTA and IH website, the EBTA guy is massively expensive, although I'm sure good and the lady on the IH site, who was absolutely lovely and sounded perfect, is just about to have a baby.

Thanks so much.

Are you planning on showing in hand? If not I wouldn't worry about doing any specific training with a two year old - now is their time to be a horse.
Even if you were planning on showing, I'd only be doing fairly minimal work with them, making sure that they are well mannered when being led, having feet picked up etc.

I am in agreement with you, I am well aware of all of what you say already. She has already been shown in hand last year and I do all of what you mention already but we have had some issues recently and as its only me onsite, I want to ensure I have the tools ready in my head so that I don't panic and make things worse. She has been taught manners from an early age, and I am not a fan of doing too much with a youngster but I am also aware of my inexperience and these issues that have been a problem need addressing for both of us.

Thanks. This isn't a post to get advice, I would just like recommendations for a trainer.

Jamie Douglas is close to you and very, very good with young horses. He is based at the RDA centre, The Brook, Ugborough. You could find him on Face Book. He is deaf so contact him first by text/email/facebook. His mother, Peggy, will help you with any communication problems. The horses/ponies usually come to him but you may be able to organise a home visit.
Coming from a very different angle is Heather Seems, she is more NH but a no nonsense person.
