Good value feed bins - where to find?

I need to buy a couple of new feed bins but I don't want to spend a fortune  They must, of course, be rodent proof and up to the job. The ones in the local tack shop are overpriced and I have resorted to keeping feed in sacks in the house rather than buy them. Has anyone seen any reasonably priced feed bins, either on line or in a tack shop etc? Thanks for any help :)

We use black rubbish bins, not 100% rat proof as they are able to chew through the plastic too, but we have never had any problems and they are cheap. If you want totally rat proof then you need to look at the metal ones and unfortunatly they do cost a fortune. If there is a farm sale near you, then they might be getting rid of something suitable?

Thanks :) I have got some feed in black bins and I will get some more if they turn out to be the best value option available. I never thought about farm sales to be honest. We have a few round here so I might take a look and see if anything comes up in the next few weeks. I don't mind storing the feed sacks inside for a bit longer but they will get on my nerves eventually :D

Galvanised feedbins cost a fortune to buy. We've always used dustbins & this is the most cost effective. The plastic bins being £9-10 & the galvanised ones being around £20-24. I've never had a rat gnaw through a plastiv one, altghough I appreciate it's possible.

I use a wheelie bin and its big enough to hold 2 x 20kg bags of feed but can be a pain in the ass to get the last bits of feed out :p Another girl uses one of the bins the council used to keep salt in. Both have proved to be rat proof so far :)

Stencilface - thanks for the link. I think those bins look just the ticket :) I'm going to order a couple and see if anyone else at the yard wants one too :)

We have these and we must have had them 20 years now. We empty feed straight into them, rats cannot get through - and trust me, we have had fairly large rat problems in the past

http://buy-recycled-containers.com/ The clip top drums, used for sand/salt storage, but brilliant for feed.

thats what i have (the biggest ones in the pic) and they are really good, i got them free through my friend. the person she got them from deals in bio chemicals, but they are perfectly safe as long as they are washed thoroghly. ;)

I've never known anyone else that uses them! :D

Best thing is if you clip the lids on, you could (if you wanted!) roll them somewhere and the feed wouldn't come out :)

also if say you had no water at your field you could fill it in the back of your car clip the lid on and it would be totally water proof. or even i you had to roll it some where!!!

I have used recycled bins for years - I lost the clips years ago but they are still going strong. I have the smaller ones, they take 1 sack of nuts easily but if you are using mix you have to shake it to make it all fit in.

Thank you for the link to the clip top bins....just what I'm looking for.
I've been using dustbins for years but last week the bloody rats managed to chew through one of the lids! I found 3 dead rats in a brand new bag off pony nuts :(

We buy big metal bins with lids on, they come with a clip that goes all the way round the top and then you push back on the handle to clip it shut. They are £5 and hold at least 2 sacks of feed if it is open or about 4 sacks of feed if it is sealed and can be laid on it's side. I think they formerly had a food product in them.

My husband also buys these for his building business and refers to them as water butts, they are exactly the same item, just he gets green and i get blue!

They're excellent value, rodent proof and sturdy - I often stand on them to reach high places!

At least the rats were dead!! Chest freezers can be picked up from your local council dump, just have a word with supervisor and they will usually keep for you.
