Sorry for this possbly long post, basically I've come to the hard decision to sell one of my horses (I own 2) this is mainly due to lack of time and finances, I'm getting more and more in debt, not really getting the enjoyment out of it and having to work at a job I HATE which pays S**t money.

My head is buzzing with ideas but I'm hoping to be rid of my various debts with the money made from selling my horse, i've been offered a part time evening job and there are also lots of part time jobs about so I could have a guarenteed income, but I'm thinking maybe I could offer a kind of full livery but at a diy yard, as in I would charge to turnout, muck out, poo pick, lunge, ride etc does anyone do this and is it worthwhile, my thinking is that with extra time i could have more time for my horse but an evening job wont bring in enough money so need a bit more, as I would like to do an open university degree and do what I've always wanted to.

On the other hand I'm toying with the idea of putting my mare out on loan either as a broodmare (she is well bred, put together etc) or just as a ridden loan and go back to uni. As part of me thinks that I would quite like to have a break from owning horses as I'd like to travel etc as I'm only 23 and so havent got any other commitments

OR

Maybe as well as doing the turnout etc to buy a cheap horse bring it on and sell it in partnership with my friend (thus cutting down costs etc) we both have experiance in this but I'm a little concerned in the current financial climate in order to make a bit of money and maybe have something a bit more rideable for a short time (my mare is a bit of a pain in the bum, she is lovely but highly strung and just generally difficult and I quite like the idea of being able to get on something and go for a hack or pop over a jump without it being a big drama)

Sorry but Im just a bit confused, thanks for your help!

Offering services on a diy yard is potentially risky, you may get some takers but would that be enough to pay you a wage? In addition you would probably need to be insured. I would suggest looking for a better job that pays more money and gives you job security.

If your feeling as though you want a break from horses and your considering selling one and loaning the other, why not sell both, have a reasonable break, adjust your finances and focus and decide what you want. If you then want to come back to horses you could then buy one that it easier to deal with, that you can pop over jumps without it being a drama.

Once you have your finances, career, and potential further education in place you may find that you are able to focus and enjoy horses again?

Or you could just be going through the Christmas/January/February blues and it will all seem different next month when the clocks change!

Anything to do with horses is usually NOT a good way to make money - yet we do follow our dreams! If you want a career as a rider , read any story about the current people doingwell- they all worked for peanuts for years. Its that determination and sacrifice thats needed to succeed. You ll make no money on selling your horse as a broodmare , but also none if you chose to breed from her. 2 yr old are much cheaper to buy than breeding one- and you get your choice of breeding lines/height/colour etc. I can aslo say theres no money in buying and schooling on , unless you are talented or ruthless.I
In your shoes ,twenties and no ties [ God, wouldnt that be amazing!!] I d suggest you travel the world, grooming etc in Oz , USA etc for experts in the field of equestrianism you prefer. My best tip is to marry a rich horsey man.

I would travel..you have itchy feet and are young enough! Does Camp David still exist? Or something similiar? Where you work in the USA in a summer camp which then pays you to travel afterwards..

I agree, go travelling. I'm doing that at the moment, as have had a fairly traumatic few years. Horse experience is great, as you can get a job anywhere in the world with them

Why not travel AND work with horses? My friend went to work at a ranch in Argentina for 6 months and 3 years later she has been working with horses all over south America and having the most amazing time.
