Yesterday, after a short illness (heart murmur which did not respond to treatment and it was unfair to him to carry on) we had Legend put down on the sofa that was his home. He was born here eleven years ago, his mum, Dorcas was one of the first bassets we had walked and she came back here especially to whelp; sadly, Legend was the only pup but boy did he make up for it; he really was a Legend in his own lifetime! He was such a character, all the hunting boys that came thought the world of him and when it was time for him to go to the kennels to learn his job, my vet gave him a sick note so he had a month's reprieve and the house was empty when he went. He was away hunting for four seasons then came back to us for his retirement and from that day, I was his, he'd always be with me if he could and was always on my knee at night; made a great excuse not to get up to answer the phone! He was always the first to be at the door when I got up in the morning; the others would stay on the chairs, but as soon as he heard the loo flush he'd be wagging at the door. I missed that so much this morning, even with six other dogs, the house feels so empty without him.
Sorry there are so many pics but it's hard to pick just a few.

We took him to Kinmel Bay, a lovely beach for dogs and he hated every minute of it, stomped around like an old colonel!

With Wish as a newly weaned pup. They've always been great mates.

Finally, Legend at work with the Albany Bassets at the front of the pack on the way to draw. After he retired and came back home five years ago, when they had a meet here a year later, he sneaked out and went with them. They wondered where this lovely deep voice had suddenly appeared from! He stayed out until the end and slept all night in front of the fire having happy dreams for weeks to come. The Masters were so impressed with how fit he was they sent him a Certificate of Valour!

God Bless Legend, you enriched our lives so much, we owe you.

Rest in Peace Legend.

What a lovely anecdote.

Thanks all, it means a lot. I can't believe how empty the house is without him even with the other six still here; he was a larger than life character, I'll miss him loads.

Had to laugh, did you notice all the different chairs we've had? Luckily it seems as one lot wears out, somebody is looking to rehome another three piece suite and the dogs don't mind what colour it is just as long as it's comfy!

RIP Legend, what a fullfilling life you had.
A wonderful tribute. x
RE. the chairs...I did notice and thought you either had an awful lot of rooms with different chairs in or had replaced frequently, couldnt decide which! :D

What a wonderful hound. Your life must be very empty tonight. But so many memories for you, and the most lovely pictures, I wouldn't mind being a dog in your house. Thank you for sharing Legend with us.

So sorry for your loss , amazing pics , our neughbours have bassetts , they are nuts but lovely. I'd love to come back as a dog in your family , did you ever get a chair to yourself? - i imagine not!

Maesfen, pictures of your house bring back happy childhood memories of a home filled with dogs, dogs and yet more dogs! Happy, glorious days!

But I daresay there's a bit of a hole, now that Legend has left you. Thank you for posting such a wonderful tribute to a fellow who was clearly much loved and cherished.

RIP, Legend. Gone, but the memories live on........

C xx
