Does anyone know where I can get this - I am led to believe that it isn't the same as goose fat which supermarkets sell. An old chap suggested I use it twice a day to get rid of filling in a leg (the pony concerned had a harrific injury a year ago) which remained after trauma, it is a mixture of scar tissue and fills due to damage to the lymph vessels.
I would also be please to hear of any other suggestions - always open minded and the vet has not come up with anything (other that a £600 bill!).

I don't think it's the goose grease that has any medicinal properties, it's the rubbing and massage that does the work! Farmers used to use it when cows had mastitis as a lubricant on the udder so they could rub and strip out the nasties. It was the all purpose lubricant for man and animal in the old days! I would suggest somekind of massage gel - cooling or warming depending on vets advice - and lots and lots of massage. I'm not 100% sure but I think you would need to massage upwards towards the chest in order to get the lymphatic system to drain (on humans you massage towards the heart).

Goose grease works by generating a huge amount of heat, so much so that it will remove the fur off an animal... It is used to reduce swelling such as found on capped hocks and is the same as you buy in the supermarket. We found it more economic to throw a dinner party and cook our own goose and then pot the fat as we got got heaps and froze some for later use. Eventually the hair did grow back after the use stopped. I think for what you want Chico has good ideas!
