Goresbridge Monthly horse and pony sales

Hi all, A friend and i are planning a trip to Goresbridge for the 7th of April sales. We have not been before and would appreciate any tips/advice on bidding etc. also would it be more economical to take our lorry from bedfordshire or be cheaper to pay a transporter? if successful buying a couple of horses do you have to remove them that day? sorry for all the questions but any tips/advice will be appreciated..

Very exciting, you can pick up some lovely horses there, and for a pinch at the moment. Make sure you check out the vet certs in the office, as they will detail any problems that may have arisen. I'm pretty certain horses do have to be removed the same day, there will be heaps of transport people there though so if you purchase, book in with one of these afterwards and they will take the horse back to their yard to come across with their next load. It will be much cheaper to use a transport company than take your own lorry, as you pay by metre for the ferry so add that to diesel and it gets pretty expensive. We costed it out to bring five back from Ireland and it was still cheaper to use the transporters than take our box. The price will depend on where you are based in the UK but a rough guide is £200-300 per horse, Beds is pretty central so probably towards the lower end. We always use Keith Prescott, he is well priced, a horseman and the horses are always well looked after, they will be at the sales. Make sure you check the route as with some transporters your horse could be on the lorry a fair few days if they have a lot to drop off. Keep your wits about you though, I haven't yet met an Irish seller without the gift of the gab, but happy shopping!!

Is it a monthly sale or is it a performance sale? The monthly Sales do not require you to have a pre sale vet cert, instead it will be up to you to notify them in the office that you wish to have the horse vetted after the fall of the hammer. Also, bear in mind that the horses at the monthly sale will not, in most cases, be up to the standard of those you would find at the performance sales but I'm sure that the odd "gem" can be found. Most people I know only enter horses that they don't think much of in the monthly sale, no vet costs and cheaper entry fee.
