i went and walked the course this afternoon and i'm undecided what to do
the ground was ok but more rain will not help and once a few horses have run it is going to get very cut up in my opinion. i am waiting till the morning n see if they have cancelled if not decide weather i am going as i don't think they are 100% commited as they say keep checking. my main worry is once the ground gets cut up the hills are going to be slippy and not sure i want to put my horse off as she is young. sorry not much help oh i was speaking to someone who had dressage today and she said arenas were ok?!?
I'm not there until Sunday, but am fence juding tomorrow so I think I will take a view on running her Sunday if it's crap and they don't cancel. However...would far rather be at home watching Burghley!!!!
they cancelled in the spring due to the rain so i think theyre going to do everything for it to run this time as they wont want to cancel again. im doing the JON on sunday so hope they dnt cancel... my pony is pretty experienced and has hunted alot so im planning on running whatever as long as they dont cancel... though i hate showjumping if its deep going as shes only little and means shes got to go even higher if the ground is a foot deep in front of the fences!
I was there today doing dressage with my two. I thought the ground was OK and could take a little more rain. I was the very last to do dressage in my arena and it had held up well, the stickier, springier type of mud rather than slippy. (If that makes sense).
We managed to drive in and out unaided, but recon they will be towing in and out tomorrow, so give more time for getting there in case they are towing.
I recon the PN will run. The XC course ground was OK, could take a bit more rain. Also not many of the jumps were skinny so hopefully you'll be able to jump of fresh ground. On the PN you've only really got one slope down IMO where it may get slippy after fence 5.
I've already paid my start fee so I'm hoping it runs!!
Good luck to all competing.
p.s. when leaving at the second mini roundabout after the toll bridge watch out for a 2 ft high cast iron bollard!!
I'm numbers 29 and 40, both in section A.
I'm not riding Basil as he's off with a mystery lameness, I'm on a bright bay first, then a chestnut with a white blaze.
Depends how big your lorry is? Staightforward route is to come off at Junc 12 (theale) along to Pangbourne and then right at 1st mini roundabout and left at 2nd but you then have to go under a railway arch - I go under with my 6.5tonne 2 horse side ramp - which is pretty standard size. Over Whitchurch toll bridge £2 I think and then up steep hill. Round couple of bends at the top and then turn right. It's signed all the way from the M4 with little yellow signs. If you think you're bigger you need to come through Reading.
We have had a lot of rain between 6.30 and 8.30 this eve - rivers running down the road sort of rain. But it has stopped now so at least a chance for it to soak in. But I would check before setting out if you can tomorrow morning - but I know they wouldn't take cancelling lightly
Thistle - if you're still going, the bridge is labelled as being 11ft but my lorry is 11'6 and then an aerial on top and fits under, so I recon the bridge is slightly over 12 ft.
When leaving watch out for the bollard at the second mini roundabout when turning left! My steps no longer open!
