I carriage drive my piebald , and today going thought the village walking him home with the carriage, me and son and dog on the top, this man came out of his drive, stood in frount and made me halt, horse bit startled, son went to his head, and this bloke and his partner started yelling at me that we were gypo trash, and our sorts were not wanted round here!!
Was speechless , I have nothing against travellers or gypsies, in fact my g g grandmother was an Irish Romany, but my only connection to them now is the fact I own a piebald cross gypsy vanner horse who pulls a carriage. Most in the village know us and the kids often pop outside to give my horse a carrot or apple. People who jump to assumptions on first sight really pee me off.
Rant over ..

Sadly there are too many narrow minded people! My dad being one of them! I drive my coloured shetland and beautiful cart that my Grandad put months of work into making and whenever I take it out my dad turns his nose up because I 'look like a gypsy'!

How rude of them! I hope you set them straight or if you felt intimidated you reported them to the police. The fact that the son held your horses head suggests they knew exactly what they were doing and deliberately aimed to upset you. We have a couple on our yard that drive a sulky and always get labelled as well.

LOL!!

Did you look like summat off Big Fat Gypsy Wedding?! :D

I saw a guy last week with a horse & cart. Wasn't a gypo though - just a really nice bloke, exceedingly pleased & grateful I'd held up ALL the traffic in Holmfirth as his horse was really young and had become confused at the pedastrian crossing! I'd have done just the same thing if it had been travellers - did it for the horse, not the driver! :) You can tell gypsys by looking at them - they have their own "look", not because they have a feathery horse pulling a cart.

Get a Warmblood or a Thoroughbred, then everyone will think you're loaded instead!! :D

Its ok, once I was out hacking on my piebald cob, and a nursery school was on our route. We rode past there at about lunchtime, just as all the kiddies were being picked up. As we walked past, a little boy tugged his mum's sleeve and said "Mummy, MUMMY LOOK! Why is that lady riding a cow???"

LOL :p

If I were in your position today I probably would have adopted a rather thick Irish accent and asked the grumpy old git if he had any scrap metal he wanted rid of, and if he wanted to buy a "dag" (a la Brad Pitt in 'Snatch') :D

I have a wonderful reply for numpties like that. I know my family tree going back at least 6 generations and more for most lines and rattle them off quite quickly :D teach him a lesson bore the sod to tears :D:D

I Like DAGS yeah DAGS

I agree with hairy cob, you should have asked if he wanted any clothes pegs or if he had anything of value in his house.

I don't mind gypsies so not suggesting they steal, it's just quite obviously the opinion this eejit had of them.

Next time you see him ask him not to mow his lawn so you can graze your skanky gypsy horse on his lawn.....attached to a chain...****.

Ditto guido & hairy cob. I would have commented on anything on sight of value, whilst asking if he's usually out at work in the day. Then unharnessed the horse & tethered it on his lawn.

Seriously, you really should report this to the police. The pair of creeps deserve some consequences. I couldn't care less what their personal opinions about anyone is - providing they keep their narrow minded, ignorant views to themselves. But to accost people on the public road is outrageous. Who the hell do they think they are?

Even if they'd had dreadful experiences with gypsy people in the past - why should they tar everyone with the same brush. Sadly, I expect they were just being unpleasant for the sake of it.

we had a lorry and were doing tree cutting for my mum,a van went by and they shouted *king *ickies at us.(i`m 53 !!).i was speechless then very angry

Some of you have made me smile.... Think am going to have a word with horse... See if he will leave a deposit outside their drive next time I drive past.. It's not that we look like gypsies.. Full high vis on us, horse quarter sheet and flashing lights on back of my v expensive carriage. Horse fully clipped too.... And groomed to within an inch of his life... And full tedex harness...
If it happens again I will have a word with local police about his abusive language.

Why wait until he does it again? He is being racist for a start. So what if you were a gypsy? What gives him the right to verbally abuse you or any other person that might be or he mistakes fora gypsy or type he does not like. Makes me fume. If people are living within the law, whatever their gender, creed, colour or beliefs, they should be allowed to do as they wish, where they wish, without small minded bigots like him being so vocal and rude. If it were me I would be on the phone reporting him and asking for the police to have a word. An apology might not go amiss either.

Don't bother with the horse, do one yourself - well thats what the gypsies do ;)

Cell phone, video him next time?

On second thoughts it is probably inadmissable to record someone :(

I will bet that for every bigotted soul like him there are 99 people who actively enjoy seeing a horse and carriage out and about :)

I think you are within your rights to report him for a rascist attack. It is illegal in this country to abuse anyone for their nationality, colour, religion, sexuality etc. Regardless of your ethnic origin, nothing gives him the right to behave like that! A visit from Mr Plod might just teach him the lesson he deserves. What an idiot!

What a weirdo! IF you had been a gypsy you'd have been hammering the horse up the road!! ;)

No, seriously though it is wrong that people assume. We have a guy in our village who has always driven his horses and they are always coloured. He lost his homebred gelding last year/early this year and has a lovely now 3yo he's broken in and now drives about. He is pretty much as far removed from gypsies as you could be.

Some people obviously make the wrong assumptions about people who drive horses don't they. Stupid.

He is a cretin plain and simple!!! if he had done it to real travelers he would most likely now be looking at the burnt remains of something be nursing a broken
nose or visiting the dentist.. but whatever else he is totaly out of order and its possibly a matter for the police, just say I might be!! but you will always be a prick.......
