yes you need to worm with a wormer for stongyles
such as equest (just the normal equest not equest paramox)
the company that did the worm count should help you and if you give them a ring they should be able to advise you

you should also use a wormer for tape worm (equest paramox or equimax) about oct time as these and small redworm don't show up in worm counts

the easiest way to sort your worming program out if your not sure is to buy a year pack from your local tack shop and they come with a calendar that will tell you what you need to worm with and when :D make sure you check the dates on each wormer as you won't be using them all imediately and i have once had one out of date

if you can't afford to pay out £50+ for a year pack just ring either equest or equimax and they will post you out a calender and you can just buy when you need them ;)

also you don't need to wait till the start of the worming season (spring time) to start a new worming pack you can just start with the one for this time of year

then you can do a worm count once a year or 6 monthly to check your worming program is working
hope i haven't confused you too much :D

Yes, you need to worm, 900 is quite high. I don't think FEC pick up tapeworm eggs, and so at this time of year I would be worming with something thats also going to do tapes as well as the strongyles. Something like equest pramox, it needs to contain praziquantel to do tapeworms.

Hope this helps, if you want more worming advice you could always give your vet a ring and see what they'd recommend.

You can call your vet and they will advise the best wormer to go for. I believe Equest Pramox is quite aggressive and so may not be suitable given the high egg count.

or eqvalan duo - got ivermectin and praziquantel in it plus they're giving a free worm egg count kit so you can do another wec early next year maybe.

P.s. strongyle eggs in the count mean both large and small strongyles (or cyathostomes) and it's not until the colder weather sets in that the worms stop producing so many eggs and wec become unreliable - i.e. winter time mainly. But it's correct that you can't detect tapeworm on a wec

I would give your vet and phone and they will be able to tell you what wormer to use and give you advice.

Our yard is done on worm counts every 10-13 weeks and its done through our vet. So when the results come back the vet advises us of which wormer is suitable and best for each horse. We do all horses at the same time so we get it done cheaper than individually.

I have the vet coming on wednesday so i'll give them a call today and ask them, then they can bring it with them.

If 900 is quite alot i dont really understand why, i poo pick every day. Theres only a few times when i didnt for a few days and that once when it was lashing down thunder and stuff, and when i had the baby.

He is really quite over due though. But wanna make sure i worm him with the right stuff, plus i can stick it on my monthly bill - lol!

Thanks everyone. Totally didnt get what i was doing with this worm count, but it really makes sense to do them i suppose instead of just guessing what to use.

Hello Donna, why don't you email or give us a ring as we did your count?

We are SQP's and can advise on worming. Some background (age, keep, how long you have had him etc and worming history, if known is helpful so that the advice will be right for your horse.

Don't be shy, we don't bite! Whilst you will read lots of good plans on these threads, they may not be what you need for your horse.

Pooh picking everyday won't do anything if your horse already has worms. It will prevent it getting more but won't get rid of them. A count of 150 or more will need worming.

Recently got a foerster off the forest and had worm count done same day, vet told me to sit down worm count was 8000 the highest she has ever seen. all our horses are worm free so we isolated him until he had been done with Pancur 5 day and he has since been worm counted and is clear, we'll worm count the lot in 3 months and make sure they are all clear still.. should be as the grazing hasa been rotated with cattle ans sheep.
We pooh pick twice a day, but if we didn't do it for a week it would be fine as they are worm free.
If a new horse has been introduced that could be why yours has worms.

Best thing get him wormed with what the vet suggests for the type of worms he has then in a month worm count again to see if he is clear.

Reminds me of when I bought 2 Newfies from the Sales. Kept them in the stable until I could handle and worm them. Got advice from the vet as to what product to use to worm them as they were both only about 6 months old.

And you should've seen the amount of dead worms that came out in their poo! It was GROSS!!!

A tiny bit of poo and then a great big mass of what looked like bean sprouts, red and white noodles and blood clots!!

Looked it all up on the internet and it was Bots, Roundworms, Red worms, Tape worms... and several others.

I bagged them up and chucked them in the rubbish. I know they were all dead but I didn't want them on my muckheap!!!!!!!!!!!

when i got my worm count back at 500 that was considered high result so different companies have different definitions of what is high, medium, etc.

i then did a 5 day panucur and had another worm count done 10 days after starting the treatment and it came back at 0. I suggest whatever product you use you then have a test afterwards to double check it has worked.

ahhh i didnt realise westgate can recommend which wormer to use. I thought they would just explain the result lol.

I have the vet coming out weds for his jabs and teeth, so i rang them this morning and gave all his info over the phone, and they are going to bring a wormer with them on weds - whichever is suitable (which ever is more exensive i should think lol!!).

So once wormed how long should i wait and then do the count again?

could you imagine having 8000 worm count!! did he not look like he had worms?

Hi wait about 10-14 days before retesting.

The generally accepted levels fpr worm count results are: up to 150 epg LOW, between 200-1150 epg MEDIUM, 1200 and above HIGH.

The highest count we have had so far was 15650 epg. You cannot tell by looking whether a horse has worms or not. Some of the fat, shiny good doo-ers have high counts. Of course worms can make a horse look poor but they don't necessarily do so.
