GPS tracking collars - or how to keep tabs on a sneaky whippet!

I have had a couple of scares recently when Dash has followed walkers out of our farmyard along the bridle path to the village. Obviously I cannot allow this to continue but I'd prefer not to keep him on a long line / lead all the time as the rest of the dogs are free range and tend to mooch about all day or go ratting or rabbiting

I honestly can't think how to train him out of this (any bright ideas?) so the best solution I can come up with is a tracking collar so I get a text to my mobile if he strays outside a preset area. Does anyone use one of these or know if they are any good? Seeing as they are eye-wateringly expensive and some require a monthly contract too I don't want to get the wrong one.

Annoyingly, he now seems to be the friendliest dog in the world, having been very shy and retiring when he came to me. Be careful what you wish for!

As a long time whippet owner, I can only say that as he gets older, he will grow out of it. I have had some that slope off to go hunting and it's a right nuisance. The current pair need to be watched, or they would wander off to go hunting.

We do actually have a freedom fence lent by by uncle but it doesn't work over the kind of distance we need. I don't mind him going off hunting and in fact I actively encourage it because the less rabbits eating our barley the better as far as I'm concerned :) and when he's hunting he comes back very reliably it's just when he latches onto passing walkers or riders that we have a problem.
