Grace has been to the vets for her scan...

I had her leg scanned this morning because it is still filling every night and the vet was concerned about a lump he could feel. The scan showed that there is still a small pocket of infection that has been walled off so she is now on 3 weeks worth of antiobiotics, poor baby!

The rest of the swelling is damage caused by a chronic infection, which has damaged the lympahtic drainage system in her leg. Has anyone else had something like this?

She is to be kept in full work, so no time off for her (

) and turned out every day. We go on summer turnout in a week, but in winter I have just organised to turn her out for an hour or so every day in her own field with my other mare. Our YO has been fantastic!

My lad has one hind that has constantly filled after a bout of lymphangitis approx 5 years ago - vet said that was due to lymphatic impairment/damage - has never caused a problem and he is working 4 - 6 days a week at adv med level

Thanks Miller, that's good to hear. The vet does not think it will affect her work and what I want to do with her... I was just worried that it would have a long term effect and as she is only rising 6 I didn't want to keep working on her to make it worse as I have just affiliated BD with her

Forgot to add... is the damage still visible now or has the swelling gone down?

My horse had simular proplem when he was seven. Swelling completely resolved after about six months and has never returned. At the time he went out as much as possible to keep the swelling down.

Thanks for that... the way the vet was talking, it could stay forever or it could go. Did you do anything other than keeping it moving?

Good news then, i'm sure it will get better over time but atleast it doesnt affect her work in the mean time...x

That's all I could think about... I just didn't want to have to put her on box rest when she is going so well at the moment

Was also advised by the vet to use a hot and cold treatment followed by exercise to improve circulation. I had to wrap his leg in hot strips of towels for ten minutes, then hose with cold for ten, then repeat the hot treatmant and then the cold. He was then walked in hand immediately afterwards for twenty minutes. I did this twice a day every day for about two weeks. This was very good at reducing the swelling.

Thats good news then that its nothing too serious and she can be kept in work
