Grace is having the Leahurst Sarcoid treatment...

Since having her two operations, Grace has developed a few small sarcoid under her tummy and near her hind legs. They have grown in size since they first appeared so as she was under Prof. Knottenbelt with her eye (which has now been signed off... and I am applying vaseline every day with much success

) I emailed him some pictures of the ones under her tummy and he has suggested the Liverpool cream.

She is having it done Mon, Wed and Fri next week... can anyone tell me what I should expect? I am assuming she cannot be worked through this time as surely they will be sore, but can she be walked in hand and turned out in the field?
 
She'll probably have to be kept in, and isolated whilst having the cream applied, and for a little while afterwards.
The horse opposite me had the treatment last year, and we had to cordon off the area to ensure no-one went near, and the horse next door had rugs over the bars to stop any contact. He was handled as little as possible as well since the cream is carcinogenic. He had a huge sarcoid (golf ball size) under his chin, and it fell off after a month, and so far hasn't grown back.

Hi yes my horse just had last treatment on tuesday, one sarciod took to the treatment really well, the other went a bit scabby and weapy. My horse got a bit grumpy and sore with the other sarcoid but other than that I cant complain. We dont know if the treatment has worked yet Ive got to take pictures again in 4 weeks time to see how they look. He had to stay in for at least 12 hours after the cream was applied and could not get wet! I still rode everyday too. Good luck!
 
Thanks vicksey... she gets REALLY depressed on box rest due to the nine months she recently has and stops eating completely (hence the colic surgery). So I really did not want to keep her confined to barracks again. If this is the case, then I will delay the treatment.
 
Osk has a tiny sarcoid between his front legs. TBH I've been ignoring it as it isn't bothering him or getting bigger. But I'd be v. interested to know how this treatment goes B! Keep me updated, I might see if I can get his treated at some point.
 
Thanks Halfstep... I have just phoned the vets and she can still be turned out, ridden etc but she might be a bit sore so just see how she goes but thankfully she does not need to be box rested because of where the sarcoids that are being treated are located.
 
My mare had a sarcoid on the inside of her hind leg, high up where there is no hair, treated with Liverpool cream in Jan. She had a similar treatment, every day and then every other day for 6 days I think. I travelled her down to my vets for each treatment and at 1st she was fine, by the last one she needed to have a leg held up, so she couldnt kick the vet as she applied the cream. It did make her sore but she was able to live out in the field, as she does 24/7 and also was able to stay in work. Vet said only to stop working her if she felt uncomfortable, which she didnt. The sarcoid was only the size of a pea though. What I didnt appreciate was how long it would take to go. It was about 6mths before it completely dropped off and you can still see pink skin/scar tissue now 9mths later.
 
Grace's isn't even the size of a pea, there are three and they are all quite small

Rafi had an enormous one on the inside of his thigh when he was about 3. He had the cream then it came back a bit so had another course and it now has gone but we keep an eye on it.
He was turned out and it was sore but worth it.

my mare Flora had the liverpool cream. she has sarcoids on her inner thigh, corners of her mouth and on her bars of her mouth. the biggest one was on her inner thigh, she had the treatment like you are saying grace is having. she wasnt uncomfortable however she was a big brute that could cope with anything. eventually the biggest sarcoid just dropped out like a plug and left a big hole which healed very quickly with hardly any scarring. the ones on her corner of her mouth and bars of her mouth were treated slightly different and she had the cream injected into them. all cleared up really well.
she was turned out on her own. we put notices on the gates to say she was receiving the treatment and not to touch her. the same with her stable door and i put rugs up so my other horses couldnt touch her.
i carried on riding her but had to change her to a bitless bridle
 
well i treated Llewi with the sarcoid cream - he just had one on the inside of his leg - 5 applications over 10days. he didn't need sedating and never got arsey with me - good considering he was very nervous and i'd only had him a few weeks. i applied vaseline around the sarcoid and on the underside of his belly and opposite leg as had to apply Liverpool cream at night so he tended to lie down and rub it off and make skin sore. He went out as usual during the day and I worked him as normal although I did have him on bute as his stifle swelled up a bit for a few days. He was sound and happy to work though. 88days after the 1st treatment it dropped off and you wouldn't know it had ever been there now.
 
Star... did you have to keep him away from others horses as other users have suggested?

My mare is in a big American barn and the vets have not mentioned anything about isolating her at all, or preventing people handling or touching her.
 
My friend's horse was treated by Leahurst for his sarcoids. She was advised that he should be handled carefully while the cream was being used as a. it burns and b. as the sarcoids die they release toxins into the bloodstream which could make him feel poorly. He made a perfect recovery, but he did seem a bit grumpy at the time.

no, he went out as usual. i was only applying the cream on the inside of a hindleg though, so no chance of it rubbing off on another horse. if it was on any part of his body that could come into contact with another horse then definitely separate them. i wouldn't be happy if someone's horse rubbed against mine and rubbed off the cream on him as it burns the skin away!

I was just worried because it is an American barn and people walk past all of the time, but unless she finds a way to have her bottom hanging out of the door, I think we are pretty safe

Im just about to start going down this road again with my WB.

My IDxTB was treated with Liverpool cream 3 years ago, he had a medium sized Sarcoid on his sheath. He was fine to have the cream applied but some of the cream did touch his leg & he did become quite sore. Some bute & he was fine.

It didnt go straight away & i wasnt sure if the treatment was going to work but within 3 months it had gone.
3 years on & it's still gone. I do beleive thought that every horse is different & im hoping that my WB gets just as good results.
