I have just had a phone call from the vet, Peter Scholefield, who has been doing the lameness work up on Grace. I am so glad I went with my gut instinct and took her to him, it could be the best thing I have ever done for her!

He nerve blocked the stifle and it showed some improvement, but not as much as he had hoped. He then started to look at the hock, and on one area it was 85% better, so he did another area and it was 100% better. He then xrayed both hocks and the joints were absolutely fine.

He then scanned the suspensory ligament and found inflammation and damage at the route of the ligament. It is acute damage as opposed to degenerative (seen in older horses), and he is very positive about the prognosis.

She is now on 6-8 weeks of box rest, with in hand walking after 4 weeks and shock wave therapy starting tomorrow once a week and aqui-something (anti-inflammatory) injections into the suspensory ligament.

Has anyone else had this occur in the hind limb?

Thats sounds like good news at least it is treatable. Good job you went with your instinct too. Fingers crossed her recovery goes smoothly for you.

Glad you've found out what it is and can get started on treating it!

Well done for getting a 2nd opinion. We have upper suspensory desmitis in the foreleg so are also having SWT. Its about £100 a session so hope youre insured!

Weve been feeding MSM to help strengthen the bone/ligament formation and are on week 8 and are now up to 15 minutes walking twice a day.

The prognosis is good providing we give it plenty of time to form a good join.

sounds like it could be proximal suspensory desmitis. If so, my horse had this and after the rest, shockwave controlled return to work it hasn't affected him too much since

I am insured... I did expect it to be a decent sum

I am just so relieved to find something in a way, although gutted that she has been going so well and is now on complete box rest

I know thats a bit of a bummer about the box rest, but at least she will make a full recovery. In the meantime you can get Hannah going again xx

If it is proximal suspensory desmitis (PSD) it is what my horse has. She had had it too long to have Shock Wave Therapy, but as you caught it quick it hopefully will work.

I am so pleased that Peter's found out the problem - that must be a weight off your mind - He's done a great job for me on H's annular ligaments and I can't highly recommend him enough!
Have you thought about spa treatment for her suspensory ligament? I know of horses that have had this and they came sound enough to continue BD - Also I know of a horse that Peter operated on with suspensory desmitis and that too is now competing BD again - I'll keep everything crossed for a speedy recovery - Have you collected her today?

Thanks Kate... spa treatment will be an option, I am going to speak to him tomorrow to fully understand everything I have to do with her. Because Grace is so young and it is so acute, she does not need the operation thankfully

He has promised me it will in no way compromise her career... so I am just hoping and praying he is right!

Oh thank goodness you have gotten to the route of the problem and that prognosis is so good

Look on the bright side, better to find it now and have her laid off at the beginning of her career than get further down the line and have to lay her off (I am such a spin doctor!) x xx

Thanks Kate... I have emailed them and will phone in the morning too.

I go away for 10 days over the New Year period and I am looking for somewhere like that to send her as she will still be on box rest.

Thanks Weezy... I am a bit depressed about it all, and cried when I found out, but like you have said I would rather it be now then later on. I am just so grateful that Spencer saw it when he did, I owe him a lot!

Sounds like a perfect solution - H was there in the run up to my wedding and whilst we were away on honeymoon - so it took a weight off my mind too!

That is absolutely brilliant news Becki! A couple of months is no time, especially at this time of year! I'm really glad that the prognosis is so good. It was well worth getting to the bottom of the problem now!

it's what my horse had that i was telling you about in agreeing with you about getting her looked at. his was an acute injury to the right hind and because we were on the ball and spotted it early, he was back competing in 6months and never had another problem with it.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes for Grace, I will pass them all on to her... could you also send calming vibes

The calmer is coming back out tomorrow asap.

Well done for doing something about it at such an early stage...I'm sure the time will go quite quickly once you get started on the treatment.
