I have just had a phone call from the vet, Peter Scholefield, who has been doing the lameness work up on Grace. I am so glad I went with my gut instinct and took her to him, it could be the best thing I have ever done for her!
He nerve blocked the stifle and it showed some improvement, but not as much as he had hoped. He then started to look at the hock, and on one area it was 85% better, so he did another area and it was 100% better. He then xrayed both hocks and the joints were absolutely fine.
He then scanned the suspensory ligament and found inflammation and damage at the route of the ligament. It is acute damage as opposed to degenerative (seen in older horses), and he is very positive about the prognosis.
She is now on 6-8 weeks of box rest, with in hand walking after 4 weeks and shock wave therapy starting tomorrow once a week and aqui-something (anti-inflammatory) injections into the suspensory ligament.
Has anyone else had this occur in the hind limb?
