Travellers with caravans, vans, trailers and horses have moved onto a field just outside the village of Graizelound. Lock up everything, we've cleared our stables of anything of value and alerted the police. Be aware

I presume that you feel they will steal from you?

You seem very angry about their arrival.
Live & let live, I say.

I got a warning yesterday that a big group of travellers had just been evicted from a site in Meopham, Kent. All I can say is, that in their case, wherever they ended up people would be right to be concerned about security.
I'd like to live and let live, but in the area where I live travellers settling illegally is a big problem. I have never known it to be a peaceful, clean invasion. Human waste and rubbish dumped everywhere, local yards get a sudden spate of thefts, horses tormented in their fields. Once a local hairdresser did a whole shop full of wedding customers, only to have them walk out without paying making physical threats against her if she tried to do anything about it.

I just don't hold the same prejudice as the OP, that is all.
We have had travellers nearby a few times and no bother - I have had more stuff stolen from flipping liveries to be honest.

However, the poster has explained she has had a bad experience, which is fair enough and totally justifies her attitude.

The police tend to warn people locally when travellers arrive on the local heathland. Always seems to coincide with things going missing but police seem strangely reluctant to visit the camp to check things out

ETS A couple of years ago not only did they leave the usual amount of rubbish but also a dead pony

Oh dear not a million miles from us. Have you notified the council they can normally get them evicted, when they set up camp at Cottam the council got them off it took a year unfortunatly but they left a terrible mess behind. And as for who ever said "Live and let live" I would be intrigued as to your reaction if they set up in your village!

The council are only involved if it is council land,Yes they can obtain a court order to evict them, but first ,Social Services have to carry out a study of their needs(presumably unlocked doors and ladders). If it is private property ,and there are more than 5 people, the Criminal Justice, public order act, gives the police the power to evict them immediately ,at the request of the landowner or his agent.(When this was made law, the police were instructed to only use it on new age travellers, but it is the law and applies to everyone).

Hi all, update, sorry been riding and lost track of the time. Travellers still there, police not interested as it is private land and as the owner lives in Sheffield, council not bothered either, I think we've only seen the owner half a dozen times in the last five years. Their horses are turned out on an unfenced paddock that is head high in grass and ragwort, lovely for imminent laminitis. Thankfully son is home from uni so can keep an eye on the horses who I am most concerned about.

Mayflower, consider yourself very lucky. We have alot of travellers in my area. They fly-tip, come knocking on your door wanting to make a mess of your drive, dump human excrement, case all the local farms on the pretext of wanting to buy some eggs, lay trip wires across the bridle ways and sit and laugh at the results, threaten people with very large knives, steal hay etc, invade people's private fields, dump horses in them for free grazing. I have nothing against people living alternative lifestyles, and the traditional Roma gypsies were hard working people who travelled from place of work to place of work, but modern "gypsies" are in fact Irish travellers who have been kicked out of Ireland by the government there and are simply working the system to their own ends. Since when did Roma people have bright red hair? As for the police having the right to evict them immediately, don't make me laugh. The police are scared to death of them and won't touch them with a bargepole. That is why the landowner has to get a court order to evict them and that can take up to 3 weeks.
