My vet has examined my 7 yr old mare and found one large ovary and one small one and is suspecting a tumour. He is now sending off bloods to be tested.

Does anyone have any experience of this and if she does have it, where are the best practices/surgeons for her to go to for the ovary to be removed?

Thanks in advance!!

I have a mare who is now 23 who was diagnosed with one of these at a similar age to your mare. She had the ovary removed (I believe they can now do it standing so that it isn't such a big deal) went on to be an advanced level endurance horse and is shortly to wean her 3rd foal having conceived for the first time (to AI on the first cycle) at the age of 17 :D

Avonbrook I am so happy to hear your story!!

My preference would be for standing surgery if it was possible, but i don't know who the best equine practice is to send her too - im in deepest darkest Devon, so i'm guessing Willesley would be a good one

My mare had one removed three years ago (she was 8 at the time) had to be GA, but once she recovered she's been absolutely fine. When they removed the tumour it was the size of a football (after they had drained 2 litres of fluid from it). I'm sure your mare will be much better after the op.
