Hey guys

So many of you know that my pony picked up an unfortunate injury on his boy bits, which became infected and a while back the vet recommended that an amputation would be his best bet

So he had his operation today... He went in at 8 this morning and had a full amputation done with his urethra redirected to beneath his tail (the vet wasn't sure how much she'd have to amputate until she got him under anaesthetics). He's still in recovery as he bled a lot more during surgery than expected, the vet is trying to keep him down as they're afraid that if he gets up to soon he'll fall over and evidently injure himself again. We're visiting him tomorrow (the vet advised us not to visit today)

If all goes well he'll be home on Saturday and will be off from work for about 5 - 6 weeks (depending on how quickly he heals). The vet also said that we'll have to rub vaseline on his bum daily to prevent scold (as apparently gelding take a while to learn to squirt like mares do)

Just thought I'd update you guys as quite a few of you asked for updates

Some of you also asked for the picture of his infected, sarcoidy boy bits - here it is (this is the graphic photo mentioned above):

Send lots of healing vibes please! Hate seeing my boy sick (felt horrible dropping him off at the vet's yesterday:(...)

Poor lad - that wasn't just the result of an unfortunate accident though. Surely you'd been carefully monitoring it to prevent something of the sort occurring?

I carefully monitored the last surgery I had and it still managed to become infected, Dee. It does happen.

Ask questions but a bit more tact at least might have been appropriate.

Healing vibes to the pone.

Poor boy :(. FWIW, a horse at a previous yard (a grey, apparently they're more prone to sarcoids) had this very same surgery and it was the making of him . . . ). He learned to wee like a mare, he recovered well and he is out competing now.

P

Ouch! Hopefully he is much more comfortable now, although it will be strange for him to have to go to the toilet like a girl I would imagine. I hope his field mates don't tease him when he is out and about again :)

Hey Dee :). The vet has been seeing him since day one of his injury, it was cleaned religiously and monitored but no improvement was shown. During surgery she also found some squamous cells (sp?) higher up on his penis - so she said amputation would've been inevitable but if it weren't for the injury the squamous cells might have gone unnoticed.

It did take time for it to become that infected, but he was on antibiotics for 2 weeks (which is when this photo was taken) as the vet wanted to try and avoid surgery and see if the wound wouldn't heal with antibiotics

Poor lad, that must have been so sore. Wishing him a speedy recovery. Bet you felt like you had the world on your shoulders when you dropped him off.

Been following your posts - what a poor boy hope he makes a full recovery :(

Would love to see some after pics though tracking his recovery :) very interesting

Update on ponio:

I went to visit today and he's looking very good (everything considered), has already learnt how to pee (squats and squirts like a mare) so he's luckily not peeing down his legs. He's out in a small paddock the whole day now and is already eating. His gut sounds are good and he's going to the bathroom as usual. The incisions from the op are still draining so it's very "blood and gore"ish, but the vet has assured me it's natural

Here are some photos I took today:

My mom and Goldie (I call this photo "Where'd it go???"):

My baba's very bloody leg (I did clean it for him after I took this photo, the blood is from the new hole created for his urethra):

Hopefully he'll be coming home on Saturday!

Awww poor boy. That first pic looks so painful. Amputation seems drastic but I'm sure the vets ow best. I really hope he makes a good and full recovery. he's a very pretty boy, beautiful colour.

Aw bless him, he is gorgeous btw and so brave (and so are you!). I've never seen this before, thank you for sharing and I wish him a speedy recovery and happiness ever after xx

Wow poor lad!!! Glad he's feeling better though. Thanks for posting the pics, i know of a couple of horses who have had penis amputations due to squamous cell carcinomas and have had their urethra's redirected but ive never seen it!

^^This. Well done both. Hugs and very best quick healing vibes to your gorgeous boy. And thank you for sharing x

sorry I must have missed your original post about this all happening.
That looks painful and the vets did everything they could for him before going down that route.
Just want to say that I hope your boy has a speedy recovery and is back to normal soon. Have never heard of this before so would like to keep up to date with his progress.
