My dad (bless him) thought that he would give my horse a few grass cuttings as in a big pile without me knowing! After telling him off and saying that he would have to pay the vet bills if necessary it looks like it has not cause colic thank god!

Anyway I just wondered if there would be any long term damage or if my horse is still at risk and how long it takes for it to get out of her system and I can rest at ease.

Rest assured my dad will NOT be giving them any grass cuttings in the future!

Grass cuttings start to ferment within about half and hour of being cut, so your horse was lucky, and your Dad has learned something valuable about horses now. When did he feed them to her?

He fed them to her last night, and I made him check up on her every hour - she probably ate a good few large handfulls.

I made him pick up every scrap off the paddock and said never to do it again. I think he has learnt his lesson, I was a bit harsh!

Hopefully you should be past the worst of the worry, but grass cuttings can also cause botulism and salmonella aside from colic.Lets hope your dad has learnt his lesson well from this.
