I have a very small area which forms part of my lawn, but is in front of a gate i use to get 1 x pony to winter field.

there's no neat/pretty way of making it not part of the lawn so to avoid it getting muddy and ruined in winter i would like to lay some (green) grass mats so that they arent too visible but stabilise the lawn.

its only 1.5/2 mats worth area ......how quick will the grass come through and is there anything i can do bar seeding and fertilising to encourage it to cover the mats?

If there is grass underneath the mat it will come through as it gets longer. I just had mud when I laid my mats in Oct and it took until around Feb for the grass to come through.

I don't think there is anything you can do to expedite the process other than adding grass seed . Though if you were going down that route, given it is a small area so not too costly I would use something like patch magic that is a mix of seed, coir and feed.

thank you the patch magic sound good :) theres a really good grass cover atm, its not been used before but we are on clay so the entire lawn (and fields sadly) go very squelchy and wet from Dec-March. However we have looked after the lawn and fields much better than prev owner this spring so i'm hoping we have a better root base this winter!!!!

Grass mats will sink down and get lost in clay when the ground gets wet, unless they’re placed on a firm bed of road planings or similar. You can sprinkle soil mixed with grass seed on top of the planings/under the mats and then again on top of the mats once in situ, brushing the soil well into the gaps.

I have grass mats which we put down like this which are now so well camouflaged that they are invisible.

thanks, its literally for 1 small pony to walk over once on way to field and once on way back, they arent in the field so they cant be stood on for long periods or moved etc and wont get the wear and tear of being in a gateway, so was hoping they would be ok for that.......
