The gateway to our field is getting quite a mess now, so am thinking for the future of getting some grass mats. Do they work?

I have some down at home and they did help for a couple of winters (probably 3)- they are now so deep you wouldn't know they are there :(

I have just bought some new grass mat roll for our other paddock gateways and it's an 18m roll of what looks just like plastic chain link fence around 4 m wide. I reckon it should do 3 gateways and hubby is going to set it down and put sand over it. Sorry cannot say how effective this lot will be. Previous ones were the interlocking mats about 6ft x 3 ft and around £35 each. This roll was £177 so I hope it works.

I have used copious amounts of woodchip before but that only lasts a few weeks.

We had road planning delivered, the Tarmac they plough up when relaying a road, it's brilliant our yard owners had few trailer loads and got a farmer to spread it and roll it, first lot has lasted two years so far and it's going to last another few. New stuff is on the path to the school
And two gateways that were knee deep in mud the horses would jump it in stead of walk through.

I have some 6dt x 3ft grass mats in front of my field shelter where it got boggy last year. They were put down in the summer and the grass grew through them and bedded them in. So far they are working but it is only for one horse and it was more slippery than deep mud. At most it is halfway up the hoof deep when at its worst. I would def get some more for this type of situation but I don't think they would be very effective in deep mud, I think they would sink.
