Does anyone know a source of low protein grass nuts, other than the simple systems ones? I rather resent having to pay £8 delivery, making a bag of poxy grass nuts a rather expensive feed!

Ta

Thanks Maesfen. I was aiming for 12% protein or less (I know, I'm a fussy ******!). In a pinch I guess I could just feed less of them, though I don't feed that much as it is. The SS are 9% protein, which is why I like them.

I have just started giving mine some Baileys Hi Fibre Nuggets in their shelter to seek out instead of more hay. This is the nutritional blurb:

ANALYTICAL CONSTITUENTS
Digestible Energy 9MJ/kg
Protein 8.0%
Oil 3.0%
Fibre 19.0%
Ash 6.0%
COMPOSITION
Oatfeed (by-product of the oat milling industry), Wheatfeed, Molasses, Distillers’ Grain, Unmolassed Sugarbeet Fines, Vegetable Oil, Vitamins & Minerals

I like the protein levels in them :). The oatfeed, wheatfeed and molasses not so much :o. I suspect one of my horses may be slightly metabolic, so I'm going for a strict exclusion diet.

I think you may have to offset one thing against another. Most pelleted feedstuffs are mollassed to hold them together. Some that are not like the Dengie ALfalfa ones are higher protein:- see below

Typical analysis (%) ‘as fed’
Protein 16
Oil 2.5
Fibre 32
Ash (Minerals) 10
Digestible Energy 9 MJ/kg
Ingredients: 100% Alfalfa.

Could you not buy in bulk from SS at a lower delivery cost per bag?

Yes, this is one of the reasons I chose grass nuts. Looks like I may just have to bite the bullet and shell out. Sadly I don't have the storage space to buy in bulk.

I know it is hard to rodent proof and find space for a number of bags of feed. I bought 25 bags of Pure Feeds at the beginning of winter and ended up housing most of them in plastic dustbins - 1 holds 2 bags and wheelie bins and I can get 3 bags into a wheelie bin and my old freezer.

Ooh, I've never had a post moved before.

I'm not sure about bins (I'd have to keep them within reach of greedy horses!) but if mice don't like grass nuts I might be able to squeeze them up in the roof crawl space... I'll buy a sacrificial bag and see if the hairy rascals go for it. I found one in my Happy Hoof last night - must have left the lid off by accident .

*For the record, I'm only feeding Happy Hoof as I bought it during the snow and it was that or baileys no 4 ;):D

I would look into the feed's shelf life/ best before dates before buying in bulk, just in case you don't manage to feed it all before the vitamin/minerals guarantee runs out!

I am in the south west, but not that far south or west :p. I may try and bully my feed store into sourcing some... doubt it'll work, but hey ho.

I'd only have to buy enough for about 2 months to avoid postage. I think grass nuts and hay chaff keep pretty well. I add my own minerals separately :).

Could you feed somthing like Readigrass instead of a pellet feed? (or as a supplement to a smaller amount of pellet feed?)

I gave up and ordered from simple systems in the end. But Damn! Feeding hay and grass shouldn't be so bleeding expensive! Am making headway with a bottle of Malbec to soften the blow...
