I'd prob feed something like simple systems' red bag grass nuts. Horse feeds seem to be packed full of protein these days, and its really not necessary (its counterproductive, in fact). The red bag ones are 9%, I think, which would compensate somewhat for the silly amounts of protein present in the conditioning feeds I need to give my horse in order to keep weight on.
ETS: HelsB - yep, I sure did! Just looked up the red bag - 22% protein!!! *faints*
I use simple system lucy nuts and sometimes the blue bag grass nuts. I only feed them to my oldie, the others ocassionaly have a couple of handfulls chucked over the barn floor as a tasty boredom breaker
If I remember rightly the red bag grass nuts are made from spring grass and are very energy giving, suitable for horses in harder work, the sort of thing we stay wellllll away from!"
I feed alphalfa pellets as i find them to be just the thing for keeping weight on my Old guy
He gets them mixed with complete pony nuts and molli chaff mixed with alphalfa (non molassed).
This has helped keep his weight good and put weight back on my stress head mare (along with the il i am adding to her feeds ) i find them palatable and I can also mix the with my sugar beet in summer to wet their feeds makes my own kinda alpha-beet lol!!
Simple System feeds all the way! All my 3 are on their feed (for about 2 years now), wouldnt change to anything else
Lucie Nuts (Alfalfa) and Blue Grass Pellets keep my TB and Warmblood's weight really well and the pony is on Lucie Stalks and bit of sugar beet. All live out 24/7 with plenty of hay and all are absolutely fine.
Blue Grass pellets are spring grass - TB's do particularly well on these. The Red Grass are higher energy if you are doing more intense work but still don't send them (or mine) bonkers (and my Warmblood is a bit of a stress head!)
We feed all ours on varying amounts of soaked grassnuts, mixed with dried grass. We get them via our local tackshop from Argo feeds. Another local feedmerchant once offered me grassnuts which turned out to be alfalfa pellets. We don't use those because one of our mares reacts very badly if we give her alfalfa. We have sometimes fed our retired horses on Alfa-A but we try not to have to store too many different feeds.
I also use the simple sytems
lucie nuts or pellets to all that get feed and those that dont some sprinkled in the haylage
red bag for oldies and tb's as red bag is spring grass
blue bag youngsters and lami's as is the same as summer grass
a handful of top nosh and that is it
as it is digested in the hind gut it is like extra haylage
I use graze on grass pellets. I tried the SS ones, both blue and red, but he wouldn't even touch them. they are a lot darker than the graze on ones so must taste different. I stay away from alfalfa as it gives him a bit of a runny belly.
This is excellent, thank you! I especially appreciate the blue vs red debate, I was wondering which "colours" suited who... It's one thing speaking to feed companies, but quite another to "real people".
NiknKia - I did wonder about DIY alpha-beet too!
Please keep them coming, thank you.
