Grass protection mats

The field I am moving to is divided into two, but the water trough (my only water supply) is positioned between the two so horses have access to it from either side. This means that the path between gets extremely boggy in the winter and very hard and rutted in the summer. Has anyone tried grass protection mats for this sort of ground? A bit like playground safety mats, they are rubber with small holes in for drainage and to allow the grass to grow through and are non-slip.
Any opinions? Would I be wasting my money, or is it a good idea? Many thanks.

My neighbours are sports field developers. I'd spoken to them about these before and he wasn't that enthusiastic about them - very expensive considering the amount of benefit and really need to be 'installed properly' for them to work.

I'm not sure what size or area you mean but my friend has a similar set up to yours and what she has done really successfully was to dig out the area at the water trough - about 12 x 12 feet - laid some hardcore down and edged it with old railway sleepers. She's then topped it with chopped rubber (in one field) and chipped bark (in another field). Both work equally well. There's no mud, the rain just drains through so it actually provides a dry area in the field on very rainy days.
