I’ve be got a question about overgrazing and how long grass takes to grow/recover (esp at the moment). If someone takes on land that has been overgrazed by too many horses all at the same time (nothing left at the property), if they rest some fields (which are down to dirt/very short dehydrated grass) what will the grass be like in future and how long would it take to see any grass (taking into account the current uk weather). Asking for a friend. Thanks

With rain that soaks into the ground and not run off or evaporate the grass will grow back, so long as the root structure is sound. A sprinkle of suitable seed on areas that do not have any grass roots present will help fill those spaces.

Just be aware that the deeper rooted weeds will get a head start on the grass and may need topping or pulling to prevent them from smothering the grass.

Time taken until grazeable again depends on weather conditions so is a piece of string question. I shut my equines off fields destined for first bite for ewes and lambs by 1st September where there is little grass and Ist of October otherwise.

So in your case I would not expect to be grazing until next spring if you want all feed needs met. If you are happy feeding hay then you can watch the grass growth on an ungrazed area to know what the land is producing.
