Well after spending 18 months renovating the cottage.........I finally get to spend this year sorting the outside out.

I`ve got an acre of land to grass seed (as it is currently mud from where the pigs cleared out the 8ft high brambles that used to reside on it) and then another acre that is already grassed and we hope to buy from farmer. All of this will need fencing off into paddocks.

My question is what fencing is best for equine use and what sort of heights and grass seed should I go for. I`ve seen reference to various types of equine pasture but haven`t a clue where to start (apart from acknowledging I`m going to be spending a serious amount of time throwing grass seed about!)

grass seed store

can anyone give me any pointers? I`m hoping to put a welsh section d out there 24/7 (with a small companion) but that won`t be until late summer/autumn.

Many thanks

Liz

Hi you can get a equestian paddock mix seed, most feed/ farm supply places sell it , however i would try not to graze any new ley for a least 18 monthes as although it looks ok quite quickly, the roots take some time to establish!! and it will quickly turn back to mud if your not carefull... fencing, post and rail is safest and looks the best you also need to think about a strand of electric tape to keep neddies from damaging it by rubbing and chewing.. hope this helps...

We don't like the equestrian mix we put in, much prefer a permanent pasture mix without clover. OH is an ag.contractor and has planted several horse paddocks with the pp blend which has worked well.

Ive used alot of diffrent sorts in the past, the only thing is i never no what im using until i get to the job, plus more often or not i dont see the results after, but a few ive managed to get back to to roll in and harrow after and as said above the permanent pasture mix does very well.

Thanks for this. What would you describe as a permanent pasture mix (couldn`t see it on that site). Is ryegrass a good or bad thing to have?

What was it about the equestrian mix you didn`t like.

sorry about all the questions
