Hi

My weanling has grass warts, common and nothing to worry about I know, but my vet made a passing comment about how it was good that they had them whilst young as it helps build up their imnume system.

Now I wish I had asked them to elaborate but I didn't :o . . . So! does this mean they are now imnune to warts and anyother type of viral infection? or does having something to fight off boost the imnune system in general?

milk warts are part of the papilomma virus. if you want them gone bite a couple off with your fingers nails , they will bleed a little in a few weeks they will all be gone!(wash and scrub your hands and nails before and after) or you could burn with salysic acid, or silver nitrate sticks. very common in foals and weaners.

I'm not sure tbh about the immune system. I would have expected them to stimulate immunity to that particular virus but perhaps it raises immunity generally too.

I wouldn't mess with them, the little 'cauliflower' ones (?grass warts) youngsters can get just go away of their own accord. :)

But in an otherwise healthy horse they go on their own so who is to know if that speeds things along or is unnecessary?

They're just one of those things "kids" get (children get them, too) then yes, they *should* be immune to them subsequently so long as the animal is otherwise healthy. My understanding is a healthy immune system is "primed" in its responses by these relatively minor childhood maladies.

Thank you for the answers!

I've always just left grass warts to drop off on their own, there blooming ugly tho!

Never heard about the imnune comment before but it makes sense.

Can't belive I didn't ask the vet what he ment about it at the time :o
