Grass Warts?

There is a new horse at my yard with grass warts on her muzzle - I've never seen or heard of them before but according to her owners the vet says they will fall off on their own.

However I'm concerned about them passing to other horses - are they contageous? Will she need to be kept separate until they clear? She's not been turned out with the herd yet but is due to go out this week.

A yearling I had was covered in them all round his muzzle and eyes, he was turned out with other horses without any bother and eventually they did drop off.

grass worts,they just drop off,i had a youngster with some and the others never got them.

Grass warts are not contagious or anything else, no other hosre will 'catch' them. they are very common in youngsters and will clear on their own.

The herb echinacea gets rid of them in no time if fed.

grass or milk warts? a form of the pappiloma virus, humans can catch. if you nip one or 2 odd small ones with your nails and make them bleed they usually vanish in next fortnight. you can 'burn' them off with salycic acid or silver nitrate sticks POM s tho. older horses are normally immune to them. unsightly! if you deal with this horses wash your hands after.

Oh for heavens sake, don't do anything that makes the horse bleed! Warts are very common in young horses before their immune systems are fully developed. The last thing you want to do is cause additional pressure on the immune system. Just leave them quietly alone and they'll go as the immune system catches up. As others have said, they are not contageous and new ned cannot harm existing neds x
