I will try to make this short.

I did not have a horse for a while, so the grass in my big field was left to grow. The farmer would normally take some hay off it - for the benefit of the grass - of course as everyone knows, it just keeps raining, so they can't cut it.

My new horse and pony are confined to a small paddock (because of the rain) they have trashed it, and eaten the grass and they are now trashing the post and rail.

I really need to put them in the big field, but I fear they will trample more of the tall grass than they will eat and the grazing will suffer in the long run.

Anyone got any bright ideas ? or any wise words about the damage they will do the grazing.

I did use a normal lawnmower on long grass when i needed to make a lami paddock, you could do this and then electric tape until farmer can do the rest of the field as they will trample it if they get it all i think?

When I say the grass is long, I mean it is probably 80cm tall, too long for anything other than a tractor and mower.

They may trample some of it but the grass being so long will help to prevent poaching, may be worth fencing a bit of it off to keep them busy a few weeks rather than losing a whole hay cut. If you are not worried about losing the hay then turn them in it, 2 will not eat their way through in a hurry and they won't destroy a lot of it, some people wouldn't cut hay and would use it as foggage over winter, something I would do if I had the land to do it. I now have a vision of your two wandering happily through a field of very long grass, they would be in their element. :)

Me too I am letting them graze it. They are eating he tasty grass, I am happy though as it is certainly not lush at this height :)
