I would like to rent a field for my horse, preferably 3 / 4 acres. All I would need is water, and an area of hardstanding, and a field shelter / barn..

I am based in South Bucks and dont know what the going rate is for this type of set up, I'e only ever been in livery set ups and dont know anyone who rents privately.

Once I have this I would hope to offer free grazing to someone else, for one horse, maybe 2 (depending on size of field), for free, in return for them checking and feeding my horse daily.

I cant really afford more than £150 a month. Do you think this is realistic?

Where would I find grazing land? I've looked online and there is nothing suitable in local feed shops etc.

Thank you

I pay £100 a month for three acres with stables but no water. I'm in south Northants which is cheaper though

I think you may just get something. Look for the field first then find the owner. Someone who doesn't normally rent will probably be cheaper than someone who is rental- savvy! So look for plots that look unloved

Can I ask how you get water there? Do you transport it or do you rely on water butts willing up etc?

Thank you for your help. There are so many nice houses round here with unused fields and a couple of stables you would have thought one of them would be up for renting it out... but i guess they dont need the money! I'll keep my eyes peels for some unloved looking land!

Me and mum pay £150 PCM for exactly this. But we are in Lancashire and the land is not the best but fine for my 3.
We do all of the maintanence as well - ditches / fencing / repairs ect its takes up lots of time and costs more than you expect.

Good luck with your hunt, we found ours advertised in a local feed store so maybe put up a wanted ad in your local stores.

Put some cards through doors? It won't hurt and may just temp someone to let their land...

We collect water from the stable roof but when that runs out we bring water from home in the car in 25litre containers and fill dustbins over a couple of trips which lasts us a week (smallholding with lots of animals and chickens)

We found the field we wanted and door knocked until we found someone who knew the owner. I agree that cards through doors are a good idea too - just plant the seed of an idea and leave them to think it over as door knocking this time of year and a quick conversation may get forgotten in all the festive organisation

Forgot to mention my field is behind my house. It's a consideration not to get carried away if the geography doesn't work. We have always agreed that if we couldn't find somewhere in walking distance the ponies would have to go on livery so we have a back up support. Others may not have such strict requirements but I can't think if anything worse than not being able to get to my animals or do late night checks easily

Agree completely, we are fortunate to be able to ours from our bedroom windows. I wouldn't want horses on rented grazing land unless a walk or quick drive away.

Thanks guys for the help. I would be looking in a 10 min drive catchment, the closer the better.

He will have company, he wouldnt like being on his own and it would never be an option for more than a couple of hours if the other horse was being ridden. I have a friend who lives her life in financial crisis, her horse is about to have a minimum of 6 months being turned away and I think she would jump at the chance of something free, otherwise I am sure I will find someone who wants free grazing in return for giving him a feed everyday.

I'm looking to move into London Mon - Fri, hence needing someone to feed him, needing it close to home for emergencies... and it would be nice for once in his life for me to be in conrol of his grazing so he doesnt have to spend his summer muzzled/in to stop him getting obese!
