Help! I need to pick your expert brains.

We have used calcified seaweed in the past on our paddocks and it was safe to leave the horses out straight after that was applied. This year we are going to use agricultural lime.

We have had conflicting advice as to whether it is OK to let the horses go onto freshly limed paddocks or whether we should keep them off the grass until the lime has been washed in by rain.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks.

Thanks very much for replying amymay and holmedown. I shall make sure the smallest paddock isn't limed as it doesn't look as if it is going to rain before the weekend.

Hi
Building or hydrated lime will burn but agricultural lime is not so alkeline and this is the only one farmers will use.

There are two forms of lime ,dolamitic lime( neutral and high in magnesium)and garden lime or clalk.

Horses live on chalk downland so what is the issue!!!

Be careful in a drop in Iron, magnesium and some other trace elements, but this will be short lived. and the calcium to rhe horses bones will justify the liming.

liming will improve the soil structure and improve the quality of the turf.

Seaweed extract is full of nutriants but not alkeline.

so what you are doing is excellant.

Do not forget to keep up the humus levels in the soil, that is manure.
This will hold on to the elements in the seaweed and hold the lime and calcium and prevent it washing out or leaching

Very much against my better judgement we limed all our land last year. I was for keeping a small paddock unlimed but was persuaded when the contractor actually put some lime in his mouth, and his tongue didn't fall off....

So, we did it and of course they were fine!

Thanks Rob and Chrissie for your replies.

Your info was very interesting Rob, and I will try to get some FYM or slurry on the hayfield as that won't be grazed until winter. I'm not so bothered about the little paddocks as slightly less grass will help my boys' waistlines over the summer.

Thanks again.
