I have a little 12hh welsh sec a who is 9yrs old. He is currently on the grass - i have been saving it and it is pretty thick and good quality. He has never had lami before, hes been on the grass for 2 days now and hes bloated out. I dont suppose its too late for lami is it? i am considering getting him a grazing muzzle, he hates being away from the others and gets really distressed even if he can see tham in the next field so moving him away is not a favourable option. The kids ride him (road walking) about 3 - 4 times per week for about 30 mins a time.
Any advice?

no, its not too late for them to get lami. i have a shires nylon grazing muzzle on my little welshie and she seems really comfortable in it. have tried the greenguard ones and don't really rate them, it kept slipping off to the side!

i think i will take a visit to the local tack shop and pick him one up tomorrow, i have never used one before - do you leave them on all the time there out?

Ahhh look at them!!

Another dumb question, i have heard that youngsters cannot get lami is this true?? mine are 18months and my other welshie is 2.5, there not looking too fat and my TB needs the weight on her as shes still a little lean.

ANYTHING can succumb to laminitis if overfed and under exercised. However, some are just prone to it and need to be monitored very closely. Don't feel cruel by putting something in the sin bin on starvation rations. Far kinder to do that than end up with a laminitic.

yes they can get grass through the holes in the side and bottom and they can drink as normal.
aoibhin - one of mine has become very good at finding a bit of fencing or a branch that he can hook the catch over and pull so the catch breaks! so i've had to electric-fence off around edges of field!

Definatley not too late for lami! I've had two of mine (16hh Broodies) go down with it in the last two weeks, having never suffered from it before! Now back out, but with the shires grazing muzzles on;

Did they get in the field in the picture? Doesn't look much grass there.

This is classic laminitis weather, large swings in temperature with cold sunny mornings - beware!!

The shires muzzle lasted 8 days with my horse, someone on here recomended the one from Dinky rugs ( although mine is for a horse!) and so far so good, I'd say he gets more grass through it than the shires one but then again the shires one didn't really work when it had become one big hole round the muzzle.....!!
