Tried the a shires one & it has rubbed under HPs chin. If it was around the top of the muzzle I could try some fur fabric, but this was on the bulb of his chin. Is there a grazing muzzle that doesn't rub. Looked at the greenguard ones, but they are so expensive I don't want to spend out unless I'm confident it will work.
At the moment I am strip grazing which is fine when it's dry, which it isn't, & YO is getting a bit fractious about the mud. Am living in fear of being told I've got to bring them in 24/7 at the moment.

Cut out the section :) that is what I did! I got some scissors and cut out the section that rubbed the chin, then used a soldering iron to melt the sides down smooth so they didnt fray and it has worked briliant! No rubs at all, I also did this for nose holes to breathe better in the heat.

Mine has got sores on her nose however, I just put sudocrem on and have been bringing her in every so often to leti t heal up. The sores have scabbed over and aren't getting any bigger so its lami and obese vs a couple of sores. The one on her chin was incredible though, just weeped and was huge! totally healed and out of harms way now

For the 'pot' type muzzles I've found that buying the next size up works. So the Shetland is in a cob size (seriously!) and the cob used to wear an XXL. The shettie has been wearing hers about 10 hours a day since March and no rubs.

BTW my neighbour splashed out on a fancy Greenguard complete with proper headcollar, and her mare is rubbed to pieces. Also the Greenguard headcollar is not field safe as has no breakaway point - crazy!

I stitched gamgee inside the muzzle where it rubbed, its dead easy to do and stops the rubbing. I'd not thought of cutting bits out though - great idea.

My 14.2 native wears one, he has quite a fine face so wears a medium size.

I found the best one by far was this: http://www.happytack.co.uk/shires-b...r-obese-or-laminitic-weightwatchers-548-p.asp

It is padded and he cannot get it off (he usually can easily with others). Nice size hole without letting too much grass through and it lasts a long time.

I'm suprised that you say the Shires rubs, did you get the older version??

We found Shires muzzles rubbed (great idea to cut a bit out though), so we tried Roma and have not had a single rub. We are now on about our 4th Roma muzzle, as the rubber is thinner than on the Shires ones, but I'd rather buy more often and have something which suits our boy. He is 13.3hh and wears a cob size muzzle. Roma ones do pong when they are new though, really rubbery smell, so we hang them outside for a while before using them.
