My horse hated the greenguard one - it cost a fortune with the proper headcollar and he destgroyed it within days!
He's had the shires one (with the hole cut a bit bigger) last year and so far for a week and a half this year, and fingers crossed its still on!

Another vote for the Shires one from me too. I padded it out well with sheepskin to avoid any rubbing and so far so good... He wears it in the day then out without it at night.
 
The greenguard is the best without a doubt. People have problems with them because they don't take the time to fit them properly. My lad is in his second season with his, it works really well, fits well & does it's job. It is also the only one on the market that was designed with the help of vets. It is more expensive than the other muzzles but they are much better. You don't have to cut holes bigger etc like alot of people do with the Shires & Aerborn etc. If you have to do that then they haven't been designed right to start with.

Additionally if the Shires are so good why are all these people getting the same poblem?

Depends what horse you have. Greenguard seem better suited to cobby types with a square muzzle. Shires more towards ponies and TB types.

Our shettie destroyed the greenguard one within days, he somehow got it off and snapped it in half. He's had a shires one for months and only broken one, and that was the clip under the throat, so we were still able to use it.
 
My friend bought a Shires one today for a 13hh section B with a tiny head. She bought the pony size. We tried it on, or should I say squoze it on!! (Her pony size bridle is on the top holes)Took her to the field to see if she could eat at all and gave up. It had been on less than 5 mins and had ruffled all her hair above her muzzle so Im sure it would have rubbed. It was that small her muzzle didnt go to the bottom of it and there was no chance she could have sucked any grass in. Friends decided to think again and limit her turnout in the meantime.
 
I did try the Greenguard one for my horse. Spent AGES adjusting it, checked it, re-checked it etc. My plan was for him to wear the Greenguard one day and the Shires one the next day to avoid the chance of rubbing (being a paranoid horsey mum you understand)! Anyway, he put his top lip over the Greenguard muzzle, which meant it was sticking into his gum. Re-jigged it again, he put his lips between the front bit and the side bit which caught him and must have hurt. After that gave up with it and have sold it on Ebay! The Shires one is doing us just fine.
 
I suppose its whatever works for you and your horse. I bought the greenguard one first because it looked more suitable, designed by vets, didnt look like it would rub or get too hot etc, but at the end of the day it just didnt work for my horse. Limiting turnout is not an option so I tried the next one, which was the shires one, and apart from the rubbing and having to cut the hole bigger, its working just fine. So I have stuck with that. If I could restrict grazing I would do that instead, but just not an option.
