It's official. Fat pony needs a grazing muzzle.

So, which one is best to go for? I can't stretch to a greenguard one at the mo so it needs to be one of the cheaper ones (especially as he's going to hate it and might try to destroy it).

I've been looking at the Shires nylon one, is it any good? Or are there any other reasonably cheap grazing muzzles you'd receommend?

Also, I don't know what size to go for. Pony is 14hh but chunky...his noseband on his bridle is cob size but has to be done up on the loosest hole so should I go for a cob or full muzzle?

I am not looking forward to putting it on him so would appreciate hearing your success stories to help motivate me!!

Hello

I have just bought a new muzzle its a pink shires one - my pony is a 13.3 and wears cob stuff so defo advise on a cob - the shires one is very comfy - has rubbed her a tiny bit under chin but she HATES muzzles but is ok with this one!!! Nice and safe - got mine from internet - was about 14 is P&P was good - from a place called barnstomers - nice peeps as I rang them up and did it over phone!

I fill my muzzle up with a few carrots before putting it on and she looks forward to having it on as it is fun trying to eat the carrot from the bottom - it take her a good 20 mins sometimes to eat them and by the time she has done it she forgets its on and just gets on with it - the shires one is rubber at the bottom so you can cut the hole bigger if need be . Pops sticks her head in for you if there is a bit of something at the bottom. Or paste some trecle in it they can lick that of for a while - it keeps them occupied .

Ive got an aeroborn one and its fab, ive found that alot of people are complaining about the shires rubbing their ponies skin raw, but its easily sorted by supergluing sheepskin to the affected areas.
My Aeroborn one has rubbed slightly but after a few days it seemed to "mold" and ive had no problems since.

Id go for a cob size, they are reasonably generous and adjustable. My full size cob is in a cob muzzle and it fits fine.

Tilly didnt seem to mind me catching her to put it on, although she didnt like it at first when she hadnt figured out how to eat with it on, i pushed a few strands of grass through and after that she was pretty happy!!

Good luck

I'm sure most tack shops would let you take a cob one and return it if it didnt fit - if you can get one from a tack shop. I would think cob would be plenty big enough

Hi, we have the shires one for the kid's shetland... and he has a pony size, so I'd go for a cob size for anything bigger.
Yes, they do rub, though I think you'd be hard pushed to find anything that didnt rub. The shires one also seems to mould to their muzzle shape, and I found that dunking it in hot water softens it up alot. A bit of sheepskin superglued inside seems to stop the rubbing. Have some aloe vera or sudocrem handy just incase it does rub to start with.

Keep an eye on ebay, you can often get them brand new on there cheaper than via Shires. I pay about 8 pounds each for ours.

have shires for both ponies, one rubs one doesnt, I think it depends a lot on the nibbling technique that your horse uses!!

Both ponies despise them but its better than being kept in and also better than rotating pedal bones....

The Aerborn ones are best for not rubbing too much. I've had a Best Friend (expensive and rubbed REALLY badly) and a Shires and that rubbed too. So far this year my mare has worn her muzzle every day since beginning April and it hasn't rubbed her at all. Ditto for about 4 others on my yard too.

A fleecy noseband cover would do- that's what I use and I got it from the tack shop. Cottage craft do them.
